15th Anniversary TOUR ~A BEST LIVE~ - Ayumi Hamasaki

I feel like my marathon has been severely lacking in Ayu this past month or so... This is a genuinely brilliant performance to watch, but the mix on the CD is somewhat lacking? I cannot put my finger on it. Plus they omitted Surreal/Evolution/Surreal, which is just silly. Still darn great and hard to believe this was 13 years ago.

18 Til I Die - Bryan Adams

Look, it is mostly very listenable, but on the whole it really lacks that magic BA had on all his albums leading up to this (and on most albums after). Some of it feels like pandering to the alt. rock crowd, while some of it feels like an attempt to show he was still kind of rock and edgy. And it is that stuff that really comes up short. When he is just being Bryan Adams, it works totally fine!

20th Century Boy: The Ultimate Collection - Marc Bolan & T. Rex

I like Marc Bolan so much more than I realise. Or, at least, I like the songs I like way more than I realise. It is all a combination of the most dreamy rock'n roll and just the sexiest stomps. Pure 70s glam rock.

Highlights: Children of the Revolution, 20th Century Boy, Born to Boogie, Bang a Gong (Get It On), Solid Gold Easy Action

Another anniversary single. I am quite certain that is all Ayu will release for the next 40 years - outside of concert DVDs, of course. This at least rocks hard. Ayu goes heavy very well.

How did this dude get away with blatantly ripping off so many other artists & songs on this album? Was it because this album is mostly boring and no one listened to it?

48 Hours - Ryan Adams

From an album made of mostly mediocre songs with terrible lyrics, to a collection of fantastic songs with brilliant lyrics - genuinely some of my favourite of his ever. Dude should have just made more albums like this; a little bit country, but with enough soul and a bit of quirk that it just makes it more charming.

This is very consistent Billy Joel storytelling pop with solid hooks and just a real groove all around.

This is such a return to form, but everything is actually a lot BIGGER than normal. So in that respect, it is a bit of a change! But the songs are a touch lighter, but more accessible and draw in the listener.

I am not sure this album could sound anymore lo-fi mid-90s if it was wearing a flannel shirt. But that is part of its charm; it is actually a bit of an eclectic mix of styles, not just the radio rap rock. But there is that, too.

The stark minimalist production provides a more introspective approach and a somewhat somber atmosphere, at times. Dude should have looked inside himself and said 'Hey, being a nazi is very bad!'. Fucking clown shoes.

The earliest of early Green Day, that sounds so budget that it could almost be considered punk. Genuinely sounds like it was recorded on a 4-track cassette recorder at their school music room.

Late-80s funky hip-hop and a sampling masterpiece. I find the messages confusing, but the groove is so funky.

4:13 Dream - The Cure

Where the self-titled album was an attempt at being 'heavy' and aligning with the fashion of the time (namely, bands that were post-punk bands that were heavily influenced by The Cure), this album is bit more of a blend of pop and darkwave. So a bit more of The Cure proper. It comes up short, but there are some standout songs and an epic intro, like usual.

Someone should have explained to DRA that mastering this stuff to the same level would have been really beneficial. It all still would have been awful garbage, but at least awful garbage that was not changing volume levels track to track - thus giving me more reasons to hate it.

7 - Enrique Iglesias

This is such straight-forward pop. There really is not anything super outstanding, but it also is all very catchy and harmless. Nope, I forgot about Roamer! That is one of Enrique's very best ballad-type songs. And then there is something that could almost be considered a reworking of an AC/DC song. Honestly, this album is just enjoyable and easy to listen to.

7 Minutes in Heaven - Pornography

Super fun super fast punk rock. Out of all the DRA albums and projects I have listened to this year, this album may well hold up the best. Probably because he is hiding on drums so I do not have to listen to his voice - but when you have a song with a chorus "Punch him in the nuts", it is clear he was involved in the songwriting.

Almost like a sampler of Eminem and the crew on his new label. Considering that includes D12 and Obie Trice, that is not such a bad thing. Then you get Gang Starr, Jay-Z, NaS and Xzibit as well? Yeah, this is a SOLID hip-hop soundtrack.

Some Time in New York City - John Lennon & Yoko Ono

Controversial opinion: this is John Lennon's best solo album. Even more controversial opinion: Woman is the N**** of the World is a great song. Maybe using the N word so much was not his best idea, but it should not have been removed from the reissue. Which is a shame, because I was interested in hearing a full remix of this album. Anyways, the overt political nature of the album is what endears it to me. After this he had the FBI following him, Yoko left, and Lennon stopped being involved in anything that meant anything.

I have never known Gotye. But Kimbra is somebody that I met? She is very cool and an amazing artist - genuinely the best to come out of New Zealand in a VERY long time.

Something to Be - Rob Thomas

I can actually understand why this did not get released as Matchbox Twenty - even though I believe he is the chief songwriter for the group, this sounds far more pop radio with heavy influences from somewhere. I hesitate to say R&B, but there is something quite unlike the usual pop rock that would get from his pop rock band. And, honestly, it works.

I have never heard a woman "sing" in such a monotone fashion - it is almost spoken word, except some of it is kind of shouting? This may be the most Australian album ever.

Somewhere in England - George Harrison

I think this album is the one where his record company rejected half of it and made him replace a bunch of songs. I am not sure they made the right call. The only real noteworthy aspect here is the song featuring the surviving Beatles in remembrance of the recently murdered John Lennon.

A Song for ×× - Ayumi Hamasaki

I may choose to ignore how terrible Ayu's voice is on this album. Instead we can focus on how horribly dated the music sounds - it does not even sound like it is from 1999, more like 1989. But, that does mean the guitar riffs sound like they are from 1989, and thus are awesome? Because that is what saves this album; despite the production being outdated, the music of the whole thing is actually really great. Which is why I would have been on board for a full re-recording in like 2005-2010 when Ayu's voice was awesome. And, thus, some of the live versions of the title track are genuinely more definitive.

Highlights: Depend on you, A Song for ××, FRIEND II, For My Dear...

This album is such a far cry from what they do now - much more in a funk rock kind of vibe. Songs like Harder to Breathe and This Love were kind of a little off the curve at the time. And I probably did not appreciate how great a singer Adam Levine is.

The Slim Shady LP - Eminem

When Eminem was content to just be funny. This album is definitely a lot more fun than anything else he did after. It was such a unique style and pretty game-changing. Not a huge fan of the first half, but the last half is pretty solid; lyrics focus less on the homophobia and sex crimes, and more just throwing up the middle fingers and killing people. I cannot even remember the last time I listened to this, but I still remember all the lyrics!

Slippery When Wet - Bon Jovi

Big keyboards, big guitars, big drums, big hooks. They were really on something with the writing of this album - some of the lyrics are seriously cringe, but the way everything comes together is pretty fantastic.

SLITS - YUKI

There is a formula to YUKI's last few albums; some full on electronic numbers, a little bit of jazz/funk fusion, an acoustic song, and one or two songs that are just mind-blowingly amazing. Not only is こぼれてしまうよ one of the greatest songs ever, but the bass playing on it is just phenomenal.

Smash - The Offspring

When LOGMAN was 14 years-old, he did not notice the message of these lyrics - he just heard some catchy songs that sounded aggressive and occasionally made jokes about killing people in road rage. Heck, I did not even get the joke of that! Thirty years later, I can appreciate how much these songs are very upfront anti-capitalist and anti-conformity. How they went from that to fucking Why Don't You Get a Job boggles my mind.

I have previously mentioned these dudes' cover of The Boys of Summer is golden, but the rest of this album is very much in my Q Zone - it is kind of early emo pop punk. Like the self-titled blink-182 album, minus the heavy synths and electro stuff.

The Hit List - Joan Jett

A full on album of cover songs and for once she skipped over doing anything by The Runaways. Or herself. It is kind of fun hearing some of these rough as rock and punk songs now sound so big and polished. That baritone saxamophone in Dirty Deeds and Pretty Vacant makes the sound so much deeper. Also, Joan Jett in the Dirty Deeds video (and this album cover) with all her white leather was the hottest ever to 10 year-old LOGMAN.

This is more in the funky rock'n roll vein that Prince schools fools in, just a little lighter in energy. I think this was the last album he released in his lifetime; it was given out free with attending his Piano & Microphone tour. Which I did. Even when cruising on jams like these, Prince was the best.

Local J-Rock band put together an independent album and LOGMAN is such a great supportive person that he was happy to purchase a copy. Actually pretty decent songs. I have seen them live with a few different lineups now, and I definitely think having a keyboardist is the right fit for their sound. Although they may have since replaced that with a super-shredder guitarist...

How did I end up with all this random Seether in my library? Like, I actually do not recall ever hearing of them as a band. It is your standard heavy rock/light metal. It is not the worst thing in the world, just super generic rock music probably used as entrance music for some bland WWE "superstar". And why on Earth is this album so long?

Highlights: Whatever song a luchador feels is suitable as entrance music in Arena Nauculpan

Watch your fingers when you go to bible school! Imagine being classmates with King Kong, Tim Robbins AND Jimmy Hackeysack - I would be learning so much about the bible in that class. Lyrically, this is possibly the best album Ryan Adams ever made.

Ice-T wants to the bring the world together and shut down the man!

Hello Nasty - Beastie Boys

As much as I love Beastie Boys and their off-centre brand of music, this album is a bit long. However, it does start off with just killer hip-hop jam after hip-hop jam and it works so well. I have the remastered version so need to go back to my original CD and get the original version of The Grasshopper Unit, because the sample in the chorus is sorely missed here.

And this here is the bonus disc. The instrumentals are pretty rad, as are some of the remixes. I may be one of the few people that disagrees with the Beastie Boys themselves and still prefers the original version of Body Movin' to the Fatboy Slim remix (that is also pretty cool, though).

This is The Beatles firing on all cylinders; Lennon writing some of the best pop songs of his life, Harrison finding his feet writing good songs, and McMarketing doing his thing, I guess. That cowbell in the chorus of I Need You is inspired and the volume pedal gives a great effect. Top stuff all around.

Hexagonal - Lessang

Another random Korean hip-hop track in my collection - this one called 헤어지지 못하는 여자, 떠나가지 못하는 남자 (The Woman Who Can't Break Up, The Man Who Can't Leave). It is decidedly groovy. According to wikipedia, Lessang were successful despite being unattractive. As opposed to LOGMAN, who is unsuccessful despite being unattractive...

High Havoc - Corduroy

My favourite cool cats with their fake 60s spy thriller soundtrack. And honestly, it works on every level. Back in the day, I thought it would have been a great idea to actually complete the circle and write a heist movie with this album as the inspiration. But I think I only got as far as calling the movie High Havoc. Honestly, I would like to know which line they are wanting to catch at 10:28 from Shibuya. It may well be outdated information, so they are possibly going to confuse some tourists from the UK.

Let's keep the funk rolling! I had to buy this album when on a super discount so I could get these two new songs. Such is my completist attitude. Well worth it, because they are both super funky and super cool.

Hillbilly Joel - The Shit

The greatest punk band go country and still manage to keep almost every song under a minute, while also retaining the whistles and roosters crowing. Every song is about drinking and being drunk. Party with The Shit!

Highlights: Passed Out In AA - FUCK, Where's the Party?, Drunk and in Jail for Arson, Dear Burger King

Hip-Hop Lives - KRS-One & Marley Marl

The Teacher teaming up with an old rival to show the young rappers how it is done. Surprisingly solid album; KRS never stops evolving and delivers a pretty firm lyrical beatdown on the world. This album deserves way more love.

Hip-Hop Breaker - DJ Reggie

I have had a fantastic day so far and then DJ Reggie comes along and just brings the whole day down. Well, except for his rapping about Robert Smith stealing someone's lipstick and Tina Turner being the "President of Party Town". Stepping on broken TV screens does not sound like a fun dance. Teen Wolf could have been a good song if he had kept the whole thing from being super loud and distorted. I need a break.

HIStory - Michael Jackson

MJ was clearly pretty angry on this album; a lot of frustration and sadness being vented about the way people and the environment are being treated. And that District Attorney that was out to get him - absolutely no one is buying you are not saying Tom Sneddon in the chorus, Michael. And we def lose points for having R. Kelly on here (very much removing this song after today). But there is so much other greatness going on that I will easily forgive MJ for that one. HIStory is still the most confusing song; the verses are so badass, but then that chorus is all glorious orchestration and choir of triumph. 

Highlights: They Don't Care About Us, Stranger in Moscow, Earth Song, 2 Bad, D.S.

Even when I didn't think Kanye was a nutjob that should be ignored, I preferred the album version of this song. And I felt very awkward rapping his part in front of little kids.

I remember the video for Touch My Body being completely hilarious. That intro for Side Effects sounds like the opening for a song by The Lonely Island. I do enjoy that all throughout this album some dude just keeps randomly yelling "M.C." And what does "O.O.C." stand for?

Early Takes - George Harrison

Acoustic demos and alternate takes, mostly from the All Things Must Pass sessions. The acoustic takes are good for more of a focus on the lyrics and George's singing. These definitely showcase how great he actually was.

Earthling - David Bowie

Little Wonder is so schizophrenic; when it came out, I actually could not get past the verses, which is sad because if I had I would have realised how great that 'chorus' is. I'm Afraid of Americans never stops being awesome and just gets truer every day. This album is WAY betterer than I have ever given it credit for.

Easy Tiger - Ryan Adams & The Cardinals

Look, I can be fair to this guy and still say that his songs are great when they are. And some of these songs are absolutely brilliant. Two features probably his most honest line ever. My only criticism is going to be the drums, because they sound blurgh. But gawdam the harmonies and vocals are very good. Actually, the more truthful line is in These Girls: "These girls are better off in my head". Any woman would be better off not dealing with you in real life, buddy!

Highlights: Goodnight Rose, Two, Oh My God Whatever Etc., The Sun Also Sets, I Taught Myself How to Grow Old

echo - CHARA+YUKI

Two indie pop queens uniting to make an E.P. - 20 years in the making, since they actually recorded the first song back in 1999. And I'm pretty sure they were in a punk band together around then? Anyways, lucky for me, YUKI seems to drive this or at least it all sounds like a YUKI kind of album. And the good kind, too.

Highlights: 愛の火 3つ オレンジ (2020version), 楽しい蹴伸び, Night Track, echo

Echo - Leona Lewis

Gawdam whatta voice! And mostly great songs... that all sound the same. So if you want epic pop songs with massive vocals, then this is a great album. I like those things, so thumbs up from me! Even an Oasis cover thrown in for fun? And yes, that was also epic (though I probably prefer the Oasis version, because Liam's voice not so perfect).

Sad Dracula

* Let It B-Minus is quite good. Very 'Replacements' style and decent quick little tracks.

* Fasterpiece is even better. Like, a really cool album

Ghetto Birds

* The Dunes is bizarre... like, I don't even know what this was supposed to be. Bizarre song titles, vocals I can barely hear or distinguish, lots of acoustic guitar. Kinda dreamy? But not in the Jason Priestley way.

Were Wolph

* The Meat Won't Listen is kind of metal. Metal mixed with hilarity. Like songs called Skeletons are Basically Awesome as Hell. I think that sums this up nicely.

* Feel the Lazer is even better. Evil Weekend is legit awesome and the great ballad Dead People Unite and Take Over is... great? Also of note is Ben & Matt - an ode to Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. Pink is Not Your Colour contains possibly the greatest metal lyrics of all time: "Just like Nostradamus/Only drunk and can't tell the future"

Rhoda Ro

* Khaki Time Portal is what you expect from a muppet and a cat making music on Garageband and being processed through a 15 watt guitar amp

Warren Peace

* War & Peace is another really good album. Fire & Ice is actually one of my most played songs in iTunes. Possibly due to the fact that my iTunes library now only dates back to late last year... but whatever.

DJ Reggie

* A Reginald Gangster is a fine collection of world-class hip-hop tracks. And by world-class, I mean incredibly ridiculous. I think instead of picking out songs I may just single out great lyrics, like "I'm the best motherfucker to talk about rabies"

* Holla Dayz Inn is more of the same. Except more songs end with "DJ Reggie 2006" and we get some philosophical discussion on the holiday experiences of a robot (who is then chased by a bongo player)?

* Song Destroyer has a great song about Moonlighting. Yes, 80s TV show Moonlighting.

* 4:20/20 is... well... almost exactly the same as the previous albums. Except I am yet to find a single track that interests me at all. Seriously, there is only so much entertainment the same strings samples and beats loops can provide when mixed with distorted vocals. Though at least there is a song about Star Wars on this one. Called Autumn in New York. Yup, that is how much sense this all makes.

* East Side Story is admittedly quite enjoyable. Mainly for great tracks like Return of the Ninja, which is just a quick half-review of a movie called Return of the Ninja. Plus Shake Your Dictionary and Kick Em in the Dungeon. Line of the album = "Last time it was thesaurus time I fell off my Brontosaurus tryin' to rhyme"

* Snapz the Clown brings back the unlistenable noises. By Prime, I think my ears are going to hate me forever for this.

* 1980 x 1000 is better. Again, fun songs about dinosaurs, Dracula and wooden underwear. I Am Alone is probably the most hilarious DJ Reggie song of them all - I can't even begin to list the humorous lyrics. Though I was particularly fond of the following from Bugs:"I had a bad day part 2, which means I had a bad day tomorrow"

* Hip-Hop Breaker - wait, this isn't over yet??? By Prime, DJ Reggie just won't leave me alone!

The Shit

* The Shit was super quick. And just silly hillbilly songs that lasted like a minute each.

* This Is Shit is the first just straight up punk album. It is reletively fun. The Chuck Norris intros make for a bit of interestingness. Oh wait, HERE COME THE ROOSTER CALLS! Rats is damn fucking cool. YAY THE SHIT!

* Hillbilly Joel is more hillbilly nonsense and introduces us to David Livingstone. MORE ROOSTERS!!! Good times

* General Ulysses S. Hospital is a nice mix of weird noises and punk rock and insanity. GRIM REAPER SANDWICH SHOP!!! Buddah VS Jesus is one of the most important songs in rock'n roll history...

* Holy Shit is a good mix of religious music... laced with references to King Kong and Tim Robbins. Makes me want to go to Bible School with my big gun. Oh shit - JIMMY HACKEYSACK!!!

* Christmas Apocalypse part 2 is possibly the most nuts of them all. From Trent Reznor's xmas tale, to Jacque Cousteau battling Jimmy Hackeysack, this is just mayhem and hilarity in a big xmas ball. WHISTLES!!! "Can I borrow a millionty bucks?" A lot of punching in the nuts going on at xmas time... Something tells me his math is quite off in this album as well.

* ...Hits The Fan is back to hard out crazy punk rock with crazy lyrics, lots of whistles and roosters. Probably some punching in the nuts as well I may have missed.
