2025 in 2025: Day 155

Remember you - Ayumi Hamasaki
Ayu getting some edge and telling her haters to Fuck Off. Quite literally. It is funny; I tend to get in my head that this album is not great, but actually it kind of is? And even if it is not, VIBEES is possibly a top ten sexy bitch track if ever I heard one. I could genuinely listen to that all day.
Highlights: VIBEES, 23rd Monster, (NOT) Remember you, Dreamed a Dream
7.5/10

Remixes 1982-1990 - The Cure
This is actually somewhat of an interesting compilation. The extended mixes are basically the same songs with unnecessarily long intros, which kind of works with Pictures of You (at least this is actually extended this time - by all of 30 seconds). But why can we not get the normal 'New Vocal' mix of Boys Don't Cry, when he is happy to give us the remix version?
Highlights: Pictures of You (Extended Version 1990), Primary (Red Mix 1990), Close to Me (Extended Mix 1985), Boys Don't Cry (New Voice Club Mix 1986)
7/10

Renegades - Rage Against the Machine
Kind of proof of my whole 'just do one album and bounce' theory with these guys. They could have just recorded all these covers as The Renegades or something, maybe brought in Chuck D to help out? Because these dudes turning all these hip-hop songs in to heavy rock is pretty darn dope.
Highlights: Pistol Grip Pump, How I Could Just Kill a Man, Renegades of Funk, Maggie's Farm
7/10

Republica - Republica
Haha this is so dated - sounds even older than it actually is, like early 90s techno mixed with Britpop or something. So it kind of sounds like 1999 J-Pop. Holy cow that original version of Ready to Go is surprisingly terrible!
Highlights: Drop Dead Gorgeous, Ready to Go (U.S. Mix), Holly
6/10

Return Of The Bumpasaurus - Sir Mix-A-Lot
Oh man, 90s hip-hop really was rife with homophobia and transphobia. And monstrous bass.
Highlights: Aunt Thomasina, You Can Have Her, Jump On It, Funk For Da Blvd.
6/10

Return of the Champions - Queen + Paul Rodgers
I have no issue with Queen bringing in Paul Rodgers; Brian May and Roger Taylor clearly wanted to get back to performing together and these guys made a decent enough album together. It just sometimes Rodgers' voice does not quite suit the classic Queen songs. Some of them he really does! Not even Brian May's massive guitar can save Feel Like Makin' Love from sounding super country.
Highlights: Radio Ga Ga, 39, I'm In Love With My Car, These Are the Days of Our Lives
7/10

Return of the Space Cowboy - Jamiroquai
Old school funk acid jazz. This is the kind of album that makes me wish I was a better bass player, because Stuart Zender is the man!
Highlights: Light Years, Just Another Story, Manifest Destiny, Space Cowboy
7/10

Revenge - Kiss
Hand down the best 90s album from Kiss. Featuring the best song of the 90s by any band? Rock out with your socks out!
Highlights: God Gave Rock & Roll to You, Spit, Thou Shalt Not, I Just Wanna
8/10

Revenge - Eurythmics
Imagine if these were the same songs... This album starts off absolutely massive - Missionary Man may be one of the greatest ways to start an album in 1986* - then kind of loses steam in the second half. But is still probably my favourite Eurythmics album.
Highlights: Missionary Man, When Tomorrow Comes, Thorn in My Side, The Last Time
7.5/10

*I decided to check and I may be right - I can see only 1 other challenger for that, being Let It Rock from Bon Jovi's Slippery When Wet

Revolution - Kara
Let's play random K-Pop song of the day! This time it is Mr. by Kara? It is fun; very big upbeat dance pop.
8/10

Revolver - The Beatles
Like Sgt. Pepper's, this album always has dorks saying it is the greatest album, or it is a perfect album, or other such nonsense. It is neither. Because Paul McCartney's songs on this album are mostly trash.
Highlights: Tomorrow Never Knows, And Your Bird Can Sing, I Want to Tell You, Eleanor Rigby
7/10

Revolverlution - Public Enemy
This is purely the title track. I really do not have much Public Enemy and I should probably feel too ashamed to show my face on the internet again.
8/10

Rhythm & Gangsta - Snoop Dogg
This only the single Signs with Justin Timberlake. It is probably the last good song this dude released - more than 20 years ago.
8/10

Ricky Martin - Ricky Martin
The best Ricky Martin songs are when he is just shaking those hips and making you boogie, but sadly most of this album is ballads. Which are mostly kind of meh.
Highlights: Livin' La Vida Loca, Private Emotion, Bella (She's All I Ever Had), I Count the Minutes
7/10

The Riddle - Nik Kershaw
I loved the 1966 Batman TV show as a kid. I still do - rewatched it a few years ago and had the time of my life. I recall this video had something with that version of The Riddler going on in it? I cannot recall if it scared me or just made me like the video.

2025 in 2025: Day 149

R-GIRL's ROCK! - SCANDAL
A super budget sounding collection of cover songs I do not know, except for one - because it happens to be covered by everyone. I need to make my own cover and merge the high-points of every cover version. Also, what is an R-GIRL?
Highlights: secret base~君がくれたもの~
6.5/10

Racing into the Night [Single] - INKYMAP
Song of the year for 2024 and this year and every year after. That bridge with the rapping and gang vocals is just perfection.
Highlights: Racing into the Night, Mayday
9/10

RADWIMPS - RADWIMPS
Low budget indie early recordings. The earliest, even! It all sounds poorly recorded and there is something about the guitars that just sound terrible. Which is a shame, because some of the songs could have been good, I think?
Highlights: 「ずっと大好きだよ」「ほんと?..., 愛し ~明くる明け~
5.5/10

RADWIMPS 2 ~発展途上~ - RADWIMPS
More of the same, except maybe the guitars sound even worse? And the drums are mixed so far back in the mix it all honestly sounds like demos. Somewhere along the way they start mixing in rap and it immediately improves the album. 祈跡 is flashes of what made 君の名は。work.
Highlights: ヒキコモリロリン, そりゃ君が好きだから, 祈跡 [Album Version], 俺色スカイ
6/10

RADWIMPS 3 ~無人島に持っていき忘れた一枚~ - RADWIMPS
Things have immediately improved! There is a still a bit of poor production that kind of hampers songs like 25コ目の染色体 and へっくしゅん, but when this album rocks, it rocks pretty hard! Getting a label deal and putting in more effort helped them develop a much more commercial and interesting sound.
Highlights: 最大公約数, 4645, セプテンバーさん, 最後の歌
7/10

RADWIMPS 4 ~ふたりごと (一生に一度のワープ)~ - RADWIMPS
Say hello to the RADWIMPS we all knew and loved! Sure, this is not the absolute peak of their best, but it is the start of that real RADWIMPS sound era. And holy moly were they great!!! And it is crazy that they still got better than this; I actually wish I could just continue with a full RADWIMPS marathon right now to prove it right (and then experience the dramatic downfall).
Highlights: いいんですか?, 有心論, ます, Me Me She
8/10

Rage Against the Machine - Rage Against the Machine
I have said it before and I will say it forever: these guys should have just released this album and bounced and it would have just been the most legendary drop ever. This album is a perfect encapsulation of their anger at everything wrong with the world and has been the anthem of the youth (and angry leftists) since. Lightning in a bottle.
Highlights: Wake Up, Bombtrack, Know Your Enemy, Township Rebellion, Freedom
9/10

Rainbow - Mariah Carey
MC leaning heavily in to the popular hip-hop vibes of *checks notes* 1999? Yeah... that tracks with the sound of this. The G-Funk era had peaked about 3 years prior, so it would make sense to try and copy that here. Missy Elliott is awesome as always.
Highlights: Heartbreaker [Remix], Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now), Heartbreaker, Crybaby
6.5/10

RAINBOW - Ayumi Hamasaki
That bass line in Real me is so gawdamn ON! This whole album is full of power and emotion and powerful emotions. It is a weird mix of dark and intropective ballads, coupled with the biggest bops of the Summer - I mean, there is literally a song called July 1st. It is all rather glorious and a testament to the kind of diversity I love about Ayu. And the bass playing just kills me.
Highlights: Heartplace, Real me, July 1st, independent+
8.5/10

RAISE YOUR HANDS!! - PSYCHIC LOVER
This is a bit more poppy and upbeat, but then also features the darkest epic PSYCHIC LOVER song to finish things off. And the first song in English, which I do not need but it is still fun. I would like more PSYCHIC LOVER in the world...
Highlights: Welcome to the Real World, BIG BANG, Save My Soul, Vanguard Fight
7/10

Raised on Radio - Journey
I think this must have been the end of this lineup? Because this is definitely their weakest album; a few great songs, but all fairly mediocre harmless radio rock.
Highlights: Why Can't This Night Go On Forever, Suzanne, Be Good to Yourself, Raised on Radio
7/10

Raising Hell - Run-D.M.C.
The Kings of Rock really lived up to the moniker on this one; a lot of the songs have more energy and a bit more bite, the beats are solid and the guitars are everywhere (and out of tune on the title track). The awesome part is amongst the noise are a few VERY minimalist tracks that either feature just drums or are basically acapella, which gives space to the message the Kings are throwing out there.
Highlights: Proud to Be Black, It's Tricky, Walk This Way, You Be Illin'

2025 in 2025: Day 82

Get Ready - New Order
New Order's big comeback and not even Billy Corgan can bring it down. We can also thank this for The Killers getting their name. The middle part of this album goes from dark electronic beats to just straight-up radio rock. But the whole thing is bookended by just the most awesome songs - which are also a mix of dark head-drilling beats and simple radio-friendly rock. I always love the way they let the electronic songs build and layer the instruments - Peter Hook's bass work was more than just simple bass lines, more like melodies that added extra texture to the songs.
Highlights: Crystal, Turn My Way, Someone Like You, Close Range, Run Wild
8/10

Get Rich or Die Tryin' - 50 Cent
Good luck finding me In da Club! This song has Eminem's fingerprints all over; matches his own style, with all the silly noises and background skits.
8/10

Get Rich or Die Tryin': Music from and Inspired by the Motion Picture - 50 Cent
I only have the one song here - I'll Whip Ya Head Boy. Is this what they call mumble rap? Because I'll be damned if I can understand a word 50 is rapping here. I actually saw this movie! It was as dumb as this song.
5/10

Get Your Wings - Aerosmith
Middle of the road 70s Aerosmith. It is not bad at all - because Aerosmith did not learn how to be bad until the end of millennium - but it is not as awesome as they are capable of.
Highlights: S.O.S. (Too Bad), Train Kept a Rollin'
6.5/10

Ghetto Superstar - Pras
I was certain I had this full album, but apparently I only have Ghetto Superstar and Avenues. Which are awesome songs, so I am glad to at least still have them. How is it I disliked The Fugees but really enjoy the solo work from each member?
10/10

The Ghost of Tom Joad - Rage Against the Machine
I got this single when I purchased a Rage Against the Machine VHS. The song itself is on Renegades, so not really sure why I still have it. For the live songs? So I can have some killer Rage Against the Machine to get the party started on a rainy morning?
Highlights: The Ghost of Tom Joad, Vietnow (Live), The Ghost of Tom Joad (Live)
8/10

GiANT KiLLERS - BiSH
I cannot listen to this and not want to rock and dance and stomp a hole in the world. The best BiSH release. The best BiSH songs. That breakdown/bridge in Nothing. is the best. It is all just the best. I could listen to these five songs all day.
Highlights: GiANT KiLLERS, Marionette, Nothing., VOMiT SONG
10/10

Gimme Something Good [Single] - Ryan Adams
This is only the b-side Aching For More and it is in really bad quality. WTF? And it is actually fantastic.
9/10

Gin - Gin Wigmore
I knew this good run was going to end eventually. But to end so spectacularly badly?
Highlights: Under My Skin
4/10

A Girl Like Me - Emma Bunton
Sadly, this is purely the single What Took You So Long? I am somewhat surprised Emma Bunton never had more of a solo career. But if it means I get another Spice Girls reunion, then so be it!
8/10

Girl Power! Live In Istanbul - Spice Girls
This is the full concert; I'm guessing some of the songs are sourced straight from the video and the rest were b-sides on various singles. In case you are not a massive Spice Girls fan, this was their first ever live concert and the whole thing was broadcast live on TV. And then edited for VHS. And then (10 years later) DVD. Sure, their singing is nothing special live - Victoria is borderline awful - but they at least had a proper live band and that helps give the songs an extra kick in places.
Highlights: If You Can't Dance, Step to Me, Move Over [Encore], Wannabe [Encore]
7/10

Girl You Know It's True - Milli Vanilli
I do no really care who actually sang these songs (I mean, obviously the real singers do deserve the credit), but these songs are serious jams and that can never be denied. Also, Milli Vanilli got a bad rapp and were totally thrown under the bus by their producer.
Highlights: Girl You Know It's True, Baby Don't Forget My Number, Blame it on the Rain
8/10

Girls, Girls, Girls - Mötley Crüe
Wild Side is all kinds of awesome badassery and Dancing on Glass is pretty darn cool, actually. Even some saxophone for added cool? And some type of gospel singer doing some "SWEET JESUS" warbling?? What the hell?? Sadly, Bad Boy Boogie does not continue the awesomeness. In fact, it's actually one of the dumbest Crüe songs you will ever hear. Like, I don't even understand what's going on here - Kiss lyrics against some weird blues riff with 80's production? Nona is non-anything. At least Five Years Dead has a cool opening riff. Except that's almost the entire song, so it feels like it just goes on and on. All In the Name of... is kinda ok. Except, again it's just the same riff over and over again. No wonder these dudes were doing so much drugs at this point. Sumthin' for Nuthin' is good - though I'm kinda confused by the big choir singing in the chorus, especially when it seems he's singing about being a gigolo? Again, 80's/drugs/insert reason. You're All I Need is some sort of attempt at an MTV ballad, I'm guessing. Except the lyrics are all about killing someone for not loving him back, so clearly this would have fit in better now. Except MTV don't play music videos now. Don't get me wrong, I know Nikki was having a good laugh writing this, but I feel like it would have been better served as a b-side or something. But considering the closing track on this album is a live cover of Jailhouse Rock, I am not convinced he had the cognitive ability to cobble together any other tracks at this point.
Highlights: Wild Side, Dancing on Glass, Sumthin' for Nuthin'
6.5/10

Gish - Smashing Pumpkins
What is more shocking than remembering I have a Smashing Pumpkins album in my iTunes library? Remembering I have two full Smashing Pumpkins albums in my iTunes library. Corgan's voice is not actually as annoying on this one, surprisingly.
Highlights: Siva, Rhinoceros, Snail
6/10

Give 'Em Enough Rope - The Clash
Bah gawd I needed this after that. UK punk does not get any more classic and fun than this!
Highlights: Safe European Home, Tommy Gun, Drug-Stabbing Time, English Civil War
8/10

Glass Houses - Billy Joel
I get You May Be Right stuck in my head all the time, so quite a welcome listen. Lots of French lyrics and references going on here. Communist!
Highlights: You May Be Right, Sometimes a Fantasy, All for Leyna, Sleeping with the Television On
7/10

Glitter - Mariah Carey
MC and Nate Dogg is a combo I did not know I needed - but they could have left Ja Rule at home. Or at the homeless shelter. The pure audacity to ripoff Prince on I Didn't Mean to Turn You On! The general 80s grooves and super funky stylings are very cool, and MC doing her best to be sexy really suits it all. I remember this movie being.. a movie? I have it on blu-ray, in fact. I should watch it again!
Highlights: Loverboy, If We, I Didn't Mean to Turn You On, All My Life
7/10

Glorious Results of a Misspent Youth - Joan Jett & The Blackhearts
Joan Jett albums usually contain a few killer tracks and then a bunch of filler. This album is the same, but without the former. There is nothing terrible, but it is all pretty standard fare. I am not convinced covering herself with Cherry Bomb was necessary. And it is a shame this was her last reissue. Give me the rest of her albums already!
Highlights: I Love You Love Me, Long Time, Someday, Push and Stomp
7/10

Glow Stars - Heather Nova
Heather Nova's first album is much less pop than anything else she has done since; very sparse and minimalist, and dare I say a bit darker? It relies too much on having spooky production or whatever, when I am sure they could have just made some proper songs instead. She has shown on every album since that she is more than capable!
Highlights: My Fidelity, Frontier, Shaking the Doll
5/10

GO 2 THE NEW WORLD - 2
This is not as balls-to-the-wall awesome as their follow up album (which we will get to in like 6 months), but still seriously rocks hard in parts. More of a UK indie garage rock sound than I initially expected. Cool guitar solos, as well!
Highlights: GO 2 THE NEW WORLD, FALL FALL FALL, SONG FOR YOU, LUCKY BOY

2025 in 2025: Day 67

Evil Empire - Rage Against the Machine
Good Morning! Wake UP! Kids these days have no idea the anticipation for this album... and subsequent disappointment. And while I, too, subscribe the idea that these dudes simply doing their self-titled debut album and then disappearing would have been epic, I actually dig this album. Much more funk-based, and a little bit rougher around the edges.
Highlights: People of the Sun, Vietnow, Revolver, Down Rodeo
7.5/10

Evolution - Journey
This is one of the most straight-forward 70s rock albums from Journey. That opening is very Queen-esque. Journey are always a good time, even if this album is not very memorable.
Highlights: Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin', When You're Alone (It Ain't Easy), Daydream, Lady Luck
7/10

Ewok Celebration - Meco
Jeebus. The hilarity of the Ewok song being re-recorded by Meco is just beyond expectation - it also includes "C3PO" doing his "rap" again. Sadly, there are only 2 songs from Return of the Jedi here. But that is likely because there really are no new themes in that movie. John Williams is severely overrated. So the rest of this album is an 80s remix of the Star Wars theme and then actual songs from other 80s movies. And the series Simon and Simon?
Highlights: Theme from 'Simon and Simon', Maniac (From 'Flashdance')
5/10

Exile on Daisy Street - Ryan Adams
A bunch of noise. Badly recorded noise. At one point, Adams asks someone if they can understand what he is singing and they reply they cannot. That about sums it up, I think.
Highlights: Blue Door is almost listenable?
2/10

Exile on Franklin Street - Ryan Adams
If recorded better, some of these songs could have been good. Some of them. In fact, a few of them did turn up in more complete versions along the way.
Highlights: The Last Dance
4.5/10

Exile on Mainstream - Matchbox Twenty
This is a good collection of old and new. The new being almost 20 years old at this point. And the good being very good.
Highlights: How Far We've Come, I'll Believe You When, All Your Reasons, Bent, Unwell, Bright Lights
7/10

Exit Planet Dust - The Chemical Brothers
This may be controversial, but I think this album is much weaker than Dig Your Own Hole. It is still pretty good and a great precursor to what these dudes were capable of, but it just lacks the real big hooks and massive beats. Plus, no icon of Britpop on any of the songs (Noel Gallagher, Bernard Sumner, Richard Ashcroft). At least we get some Beth Orton?
Highlights: In Dust We Trust, Leave Home, Song to the Siren, Chico's Groove, Alive Alone
7.5/10

2025 in 2025: Day 16

Barcelona - Freddie Mercury & Montserrat Caballé
Oh man, this is one of those albums I kind of grew up hearing - but mostly in the background. But it is so engrained in my head that I when I once listened to the re-recorded version with the orchestra, something sounded off. Musically, it is more theatre than pop/rock. And it all totally works - I would see this show. But only in 1988 with Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé in the lead roles. I really need to give the orchestrated version another attempt.
Highlights: Barcelona, How Can I Go On
8/10

Bare Bones - Bryan Adams
One of my genuine favourite pop/rock songwriters performing his hits stripped back - what's not to like? Darn this man's voice is solid on this. Hearing the crowd singalong with Everything I Do reminds me just how massive that song was - and how much it kinda killed Adams' career. It's also funny hearing him sing these heartfelt songs and then throw in some joke line to completely kill the mood. Clearly the man does not take himself so seriously. There are a few songs on here that are not found elsewhere, as well. Smart man, that Bryan Adams. But not that smart, because I miss Keith Scott.
Highlights: You've Been a Friend to Me, All For Love
7/10

Barely Legal - The Hives
Well, this sure is a change of pace. The Hives doing raw fast punk rock. It's a lot of fun. It is only the start of how fun they will get.
Highlights: Closed for the Season
6.5/10

Barracuda - Kinky
This album takes me back to a more peaceful time when one could purchase CDs from ebay for US$1 and get them shipped for only a few dollars and not have to worry about taxes or GST or anything else. Because that is how I managed to get most of my Kinky discography. And my life has been all the better for it. I pity our youth who do not get to experience such joy. Sure, they can access any music in the world thanks to streaming music for free and can probably access more Kinky albums than I own, but I still pity them. Oh yeah, this album. It's great. Probably the most straight electro-funk album they've made? It's groovy.
Highlights: Masacre Sónica, Avión, TachiMariPedónCocongo
7/10

Bat Out of Hell - Meatloaf
This is simply You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth. Fun fact: I have never actually listened to this full album. Or much Meatloaf at all! You would think a highly-acclaimed 'rock opera' would be right up my alley, so I should change that one day...
7/10

Batman - Prince
Think about the future! If you take the Batman thing out of this, it is still an awesome album. Just about perfect, really. And really just encapsulates my progression as a human: when this came out, I hated Prince and I hated this music. Someone go back in time to 1989 and beat LOGMAN with a Batpole. And this album.
Highlights: Electric Chair, Batdance
8.5/10

Batman Theme - Neil Hefti & His Orchestra and Chorus
This is the theme song for the 1966 Batman television series. The greatest Batman television series. And such a wonderful theme. I recorded my own version and then made a video of me in my Batman onesie, rockin' out and defeating Godzilla. Because LOGMAN knows how to spend his free time.
9/10

Battle Born - The Killers
I genuinely liked The Killers. A lot. Their first album was an absolute masterpiece. But please note the past tense used - liked. Somewhere along the road they started thinking they were some sort of modern Bruce Springsteen or Jon Bon Jovi. I'm not saying this album doesn't have a few good songs, but boy does Brandon Flowers need more autotune. And some of this is bland; like, The Way it Was sounds like it is commercial on Spotify or something. Actually, it just hit me - this sounds like modern Ryan Adams with keyboards! It's all a bit of a shame, because amongst this mediocreness are some genuinely good songs. They need to change their name, because nowadays all they are killing is my attention.
Highlights: Battle Born, Runaways,
6/10

The Battle of Los Angeles - Rage Against The Machine
This is the kind of energy I need after that. The real difference I'm finding here is these songs seem almost ready for the radio. Almost. I mean, these dudes are still super angry and expressing that through swearing and whatnot, but they have some neat hooks going on and the songs are all in that 3 to 4 minute range. But it is still RATM in the best possible way.
Highlights: Guerilla Radio, Born of a Broken Man, New Millenium Homes
7/10

Baywatch - Various Artists
If you don't love those opening and end credits songs to Baywatch, then I don't know what to tell you. They bookend this album and in-between we get the worst Beach Boys song I've ever heard, some early-90s R&B, a couple of actors from Baywatch, and plenty of David Hasselhoff. Now excuse me while I go run along the beach...
Highlights: I'm Always Here - Jim Jamison, I Believe - David Hasselhoff, Current of Love - David Hasselhoff
5/10

Be Ambitious - JUDY AND MARY
YUKI and her punk rock roots are always good times. Nothing like 2 weird instrumentals and 3 quick punk rock songs to perfectly do a punk EP. This was the debut from JAM and it is the first of their releases I'll be listening to; their final album starts with W, so will likely be the last of their releases I will listen to! That's how you do it, people.
Highlights: Judy is a Punk Rocker, Make Up One's Mind, Blue Tears

2025 in 2025: Day 197

Somehow I have made it to the end of the year with 17 albums to go. What a trip... 愛泥C - Charisma.com Like always, big beats, dreamy vocals,...
