Young Man with the Big Beat: Live Performances - Elvis Presley

The Las Vegas performance is so fantastic; even as a young man, this dude never took any of this seriously - he keeps calling Heartbreak Hotel "Heartburn Motel", making jokes about the money his record label is making, and insulting all his own songs. The Louisiana Hayride stuff is a mixed bag - the performances are great and full of energy, but they were recorded off a radio in 1956 so the quality is about what you would expect.

This is the most 90s radio rock sounding album since the 90s. Rob Thomas' voice is sooooo American, but he manages to convey a lot of emotion, which really carries the simplicity of the songs.

YUKI "The Present" 2010.6.14,15 Bunkamura Orchard Hall - YUKI

This is somewhat interesting, because in true YUKI form she gives a few of the songs more of a jazz interpretation and also works them in to some little medleys. The whole is just a bit let down because her voice is nowhere near the awesome as it normally can be. And it is a bit long. But the setlist is fantastic!

YUKI concert tour "trance/forme" 2019 東京国際フォーラム ホールA - YUKI

This tour, for me (forme?), is YUKI at her vocal peak. And the reworking of some of these songs is just phenomenal. But bah gawd even on the fairly faithful performances, her vocals are just so much more than expected. And the end run of this is ALL THE FEELS. No cap: this version of はみだせ ラインダンスから is one of my all-time favourite songs (which is amazing, since the studio version is just kind of a song).

If Weird Al was a band and attempted to not just do satire, I imagine it would be something like this. Mostly super fun and silly pop rock. With an emphasis on the silly. Songs about animals, food, old men doing old men things, and... lumps? The sort of album you would put on while acting like a clown with your friends.

Prince From Another Planet [Disc 1] - Elvis Presley

Elvis live at Madison Square Garden, but remixed. It is bizarre to me that they released this set and then proceeded to pretend it never happened, because every subsequent release has just reverted to the original version. So this is the afternoon concert and it is awesome! Elvis' voice is better than ever and the setlist is pretty much fire (except maybe missing a few songs like Just Pretend that would have topped it off nicely). One of the best live Elvis albums ever.

I really like Roar - it is a catchy big pop banger. The rest of this album... is a testament to all that is wrong with Katy Perry. Hard to believe she actually has gotten even worse than this. Even harder to believe she still has fans!

PRISMIC - YUKI

YUKI's debut album is unlike anything she has released since; somewhat dark post-grunge more in line with JUDY AND MARY, with a hint of electronica and one of the most beautiful Beatles-esque ballads, and some extended art rock vibes. And that last half is just top-tier YUKI. I still cannot decide if the live version of 呪い is better than this version...

Prisoner - Ryan Adams

Ah the album that helped kill DRA's career! I will never forget the hype this thing got, which was only matched by my pure indifference to the whole thing; there are still some good lyrics, but musically it is trying to be too much and his vocals are, quite frankly, a mess. In trying to sound like Bruce Springsteen, he forgot that he had his own voice that was actually decent. Coming after a reworking of a Taylor Swift album, it was like this guy no longer had his own identity. Or ever had one in the first place.

This turned out to be the biggest scam and was the end for me with this dude; it was advertised as exclusive to the box set, but then before it even shipped out he offered the compilation on streaming and iTunes and whatnot. And then bitched online about anyone that was bitching online. Because that is DRA. Also, these songs are just mediocre. So it was double lose!

The Private Press - DJ Shadow

This album is certainly a groove. Low key low-fi beats, funky basslines and all sorts of killer samples. Things really shine when Shadow is sampling some big airy 80s synths over top of some breakin' beats.

Proof - BTS

This is pretty much BTS's greatest hits, just with a few new songs to make even the hardcore fan have to purchase this. And it does not have all the hits, so you still need to buy other albums to get everything great. But this is a briiliant highlights package. And the new songs are killer. I am trying to be a bit tougher on my grading for this, because I can easily get caught up in the BTS cool and just give it all super scores. But hey they deserve it!

This is take 1. I had read it was pretty awesome, and they were right. Apart from some messing up by the guitarist, Elvis' vocal delivery is actually better in some parts. Awesome song. And if I had waited, I would have had this with my 50th Anniversary collection of the '68 Comeback Special. One day I might import that last CD in to my library...

Such a total change of pace from their first two albums; much more chilled, musically, but lyrically they are a lot angrier. Especially when dissing Ice Cube. Dude got murderised.

I am... - Ayumi Hamasaki
One of the first Ayu albums I ever heard, and like A BEST I scored it for $1 at the opshop. And unlike A BEST, I actually liked this one when I first listened to it! I probably love it even more now; there is so much energy and emotion just pouring through every song. It is one of those albums where I need an option for 6 or 7 stars for some of the songs. And bah gawd that guitar solo in Daybreak is just the business.

This is a bit more of Blasko vs the orchestra, compared to her earlier works. And, for the most part, it really works. I also really like her voice on this album. An improvement over As Day Follows Night, to be sure!

I Believe: The Gospel Masters - Elvis Presley
In case I have not made this clear enough, Elvis singing gospel songs is where he was at his best and it is VERY enjoyable to listen to. Sure, I prefer the uptempo stuff to the slower ones, but we are talking 4 discs of goodness right here. I need to do a back-to-back comparison between the songs that are found both here and on the Nashville sets, because I am not sure I need a million versions of everything. I strangely find some of the home recordings and rehearsal versions more fun that the studio tracks - Elvis is clearly more relaxed and just having fun singing songs he loves.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Trash...
AKA LOGMAN Does an Oopsie!

So, I spent 24 hours travelling and listening to all this music that I've been working my way through. Which is all fine and dandy. Being that I was travelling, I kept all my scores/ratings and ramblings in notes on my phone. And then the most hilarious thing happened and I had to restore my phone before being able to do a backup. Which meant I lost all my data from the last 6 months - including all the listening history! Now how will I know how many times I listened to ELLEGARDEN and Queen back in December?!?

So I lost about 2 weeks of listening time sorting this all out. Plus all this music I listened to while travelling and getting sorted? You guessed it - I will have to listen to it and rate it and discuss it all over again. Which is a shame, because I am sure my original bLogging would have been super entertaining and full of extremely witty dialogue. For sure...

So let's get back to it! We are almost 6 months into 2025 and I am still barely a third through this...

FTD062: An American Trilogy, January/February 1972 - Elvis Presley

Another live compilation in the form of an actual live setlist. The recordings for the most part are really good and the band are seriously on fire! Elvis' voice is definitely not at its best, though.

This show is mostly decent, but the recording/mix is just not great. Almost sounds like an audience recording? The crowd were certainly hot! Elvis didn't even kiss everyone during Love Me Tender. Anyways, clearly the real king of the garden was Bret Hart. Both Boston and Madison.

Full Blast - MC Hammer

Really just a glorified EP from the Hammerman; five songs and then the instrumental version of said five songs. Look, part of what I will always love about Hammer is that he works in such a great pop/dance vibe in the hip-hop. But when the man is angry and lets loose on his diss work, it goes hard!

Fumbling Towards Ecstasy - Sarah McLachlan

Last time I was listening to this album, I was wandering around Shanghai airport. This has probably been a more focused listen, which is great, because this album is pretty good and at times I really like McLachlan's voice and delivery. And whatever is going on musically, for the most part. It has been too long now to compare these versions to those found on the Freedom Sessions album, so one day next year I will have to do a direct back-to-back listen and comparison.

Fun in Space - Roger Taylor

This album sounds exactly like it came from someone involved in the creation of Queen's Hot Space album. In fact, some of these songs sound like they were reworked for that album - because some of them sound very similar. Whenever I read this album title, I get confused and start singing Prime Jive to myself. Because there is that line Roger Taylor sings about "rock in space" and the full title of the song is Rock It (Prime Jive). Try to keep up, please...

A Funk Odyssey - Jamiroquai

Bah gawd this album blew my mind back in 2002 and was responsible for me becoming a Jamiroquai fan. Rob Harris' guitar work is so unbelievably funky and out of this world. And that bass line on Love Foolosophy is super funky. And then Stop Don't Panic features the sort of funk guitar that completely changes the game. Intergalactic Disco Express, right here.

The Funky Headhunter - MC Hammer

Hammer sans MC has no time for suckers talking smack. For the longest time, I thought It's All Good was on Too Legit To Quit. Kids are stupid. Especially the kids not listening to this album, because it is super awesome. Sure, as usual some of the songs are a bit long, and the whole album probably could have been edited down a bit (18 tracks at 1 hour 15 is genuinely not necessary), and my man don't need to be making me choose a side between him and Run DMC. And Hammer for sure wasn't all talk; Redman is on the record that Hammer came to him personally and had him apologising for talking trash, because Hammer don't play like that. Y'all busters should have just let Hammer do his pop super hype dancing!

FutureSex/LoveSounds - Justin Timberlake

I gushed stupidly about this album back when my bLog was just getting started - almost 20 years ago! Does the album hold up in 2025? Well... yes. Absolutely. Losing My Way is mostly a cool song, but the lyrics are pretty cringe; there is nothing about JT that I find relatable to a broke meth addict. Somehow I have ended up with a censored version, which annoys me in all the ways you could imagine. And it has a bunch of remixes at the end that are all unnecessary. Especially the one featuring Beyoncé. But especially 50 Cent being super lewd and gross. Otherwise, it is still a very great album that I just need to get back to the original uncensored un-deluxe version.

FTD020: Elvis at the International, Las Vegas, 23 August 1969 - Elvis Presley

Bah gawd this is a fantastic live show. Elvis' return to the stage after 9 years and he is sure having fun. Suspicious Minds here is a bit more on the same pace as the studio version (unlike later versions where they basically have a challenge to see how fast they can play it). Hmmm... I need to rethink my lack of the 1969 live boxset in my collection...

It is in the name. Outtakes of some of the most generic songs Elvis could have recorded in the 60s. I mean, it is all still fine and dandy, but there is not much that distinguishes anything these from the final masters.

More Nashville outtakes? I must have a whole decade's worth by now. This at least has come great gospel tracks, because I loves me some Elvis gospel numbers. But, honestly, these last couple of FTD releases have felt more like compilations with some added studio chatter and possibly better mixes.

FTD032: The Impossible Dream, January 1971 - Elvis Presley

This is mostly one live show, but really a compilation of live shows edited together to give the feel of a single live show from Elvis' Las Vegas shows in January 1971. Because they were likely all the same setlist. Did you know that during the dinner shows (Elvis performed twice a day - first during dinner and the second at midnight), Elvis was under contract to limit his performance to an hour so that guests would go back to blowing their money at the casino? Interesting? Possibly more interesting than this album? The performances are fine, but the recordings are pretty blah.

FTD036: Polk Salad Annie, Las Vegas, February 1970 - Elvis Presley

More Elvis in Vegas? It really should not be that surprising that there are so many live concerts from Las Vegas, because Elvis spent a bunch of his post-film career doing residencies there. And at least this is good quality. And a few songs that I don't always see in the setlist, like Kentucky Rain. Which starts off awesome, but Elvis is too busy having fun to sing a ballad without laughing. A lot of the songs are a little bit of a slower tempo, which actually improves the groove. The introductions are hilarious; Elvis tells the crowd he "can't wait for this show to be over" and then gets completely confused between a lead guitar and a piano. Oh, there is a different drummer! That's why things are much tighter - they should have replaced Ronnie with this dude. Even the rehearsals are a fun listen.

FTD053: Made In Memphis - Elvis Presley

More outtakes from the From Elvis in Memphis/Back in Memphis sessions? Nope, just a mix of outtakes that were recorded in Memphis. That's also fine by me, because that includes the Stax sessions. And then it all ends with some home recordings and Elvis reciting a heartfelt poem for his friends.

Another compilation of live tracks in Las Vegas. The 1969 stuff is seriously fantastic and Elvis' banter is at all-time hilarious high. This might be the only live version of Love Me Tender that does not involve Elvis kissing every woman in the audience. Upon further investigation, I have no idea what this album actually is... but it is great?

This is actually the opening night of Elvis' Las Vegas residency that was recorded for the That's The Way It Is film (which itself completely rules). It is a great show. I didn't need more rehearsals at the end...

FTD009: 6363 Sunset Boulevard
This is another collection of outtakes - this time from 1972 & 1975. This undubbed take of Always On My Mind is stellar. Other than that and a strange version of Burning Love, I am pretty sure I have the rest in similar form; the rehearsals from On Tour are probably included in that set and the outtakes from Today are very similar to the un-overdubbed versions found in that set.

FTD012: The Way It Was - Elvis Presley
Rehearsals for That's The Way It Is. And it starts of incredibly poor - not the performances, the recordings. The tape must have been found buried beneath 3 tonnes of mud and lava and dinosaur fossils. Thankfully, things get more listenable after a few songs. This is a collection I enjoy a lot; I love From Elvis in Memphis (and Back in Memphis, to a lesser degree) and these are basically undubbed/slightly less polished versions. The harmonica is much more present in Stranger in My Own Home Town (and Elvis is just completely getting into the whole thing). It owns. This is the most chilled version of Suspicious Minds you will ever hear. FTD released a big 5-disc set of all this stuff a few years ago and I sometimes think I should have got it. Today is one of those days...

AKA More Elvis Marathons

I have a whole bunch of Elvis 'Follow That Dream' releases that are all coming up now, because they are labelled in my iTunes as "FTD0xx:". The numbers will jump all over the place, because I have already eliminated the ones that were later released as part of another set (e.g. FTD001 was the 68 Comeback Special outtakes/rehearsals, which were later included in the 40th and 50th anniversary collections). I would imagine that listening to these now will help eliminate some of them from my library, because I really have enough Elvis outtakes and rehearsal on all my box sets.

FTD002: Out In Hollywood - Elvis Presley
This is all alternate takes of songs from movies. There are no undiscovered gems here. The only thing that really stands out is after singing Lonely Man, the engineer can be heard telling Elvis it was "beautiful" and Elvis thanks him for the compliment. Young Elvis was a rebel, but also hella respectful and genuinely appreciated that people liked his voice. Actually, the real highlight here is an isolated vocal overdub of for You're So Square. Quite fun to just here Elvis' voice like that.

Now this is actually very enjoyable. I can not believe I still have not picked up the other Jungle Room set that would make this obsolete. I love these late 70's numbers and getting them without the overdubs. And Elvis' "Italian" version of Moody Blue is rather entertaining.

FTD007: Too Much Monkey Business - Elvis Presley
This is all so weird I actually had to google to understand what was going on here; in the early 80s, Elvis' long-time producer tried to cash in on things by taking some old Elvis vocals and getting a team of musicians to redo the music in a more "modern" way, and this FTD release is the original album PLUS 10 bonus tracks from the same "sessions". We can mock, but they are still doing this sort of thing with Elvis' songs to this day. Look, I am not trying to say these are the definitive versions or anything, but it is kind of fun.

This is possibly the most proper Elvis album since 1956. And probably the last. And likely the best. Of course I have the Legacy Edition which has a bunch of bonus tracks that do not really add anything, but the mix and remaster on this is just perfect. But that version of Hey Jude is awful. 1968/69 Elvis was the coolest guy on the planet.

From Under the Cork Tree - Fall Out Boy

The coolest emo-punk album of mid-00s? That bridge/breakdown/whateveryouwanttocallit in Dance, Dance is super awesome. I'm sucker for a half-time change-up in the middle of a punk song. Pretty funny hearing them sing lines about being old. Mofos were only, what, 25 when they made this? My dudes, we are old now.

Frontiers - Journey

Have we discussed Steve Perry's voice? That dude was so great. Between him, Arnel Pineda and Jimmy Barnes, it is like these guys will only work with singers that can seriously bring it. And Neil Schon's guitar tone is pretty sweet. Like all albums in my Journey collection (my Journey journey?), this has a bunch of bonus tracks - this time from soundtracks and such. I had no idea they did a song for Tron, or Ask The Lonely was from a John Travolta movie. But then I am not exactly known for being a Journey biographer (a Journey's journey journeyman?).

It's an Easter Elvis Extravaganza!

Elvis On Tour: April 9, 1972, Hampton Roads - Elvis Presley

Oh, you thought we were done with Elvis? Silly amateurs. Of course I have the Elvis On Tour boxset, with the original film on blu-ray + 6 CDs of concerts and rehearsals. This, obviously, is the first concert in the set. We lose Elvis' vocals for most of I Got a Woman, so that's not fun. But the rest of this show is a delight. Elvis has some difficulties with the crowd and then gives his piano player some stick for playing Teddy Bear too fast. This rendition of Bridge over Troubled Water is killer, but someone tell Ronnie Tutt to calm down! Suspicious Minds also goes off the rails, but that's because Elvis is getting attacked by female fans or something. They brought more photo albums from the plane...

Elvis On Tour: April 10, 1972, Richmond - Elvis Presley

Concert number two! Never Been to Spain is such an awesome song - I even found a live performance by Three Dog Night that was very enjoyable. Those dudes could sing. Some woman just yelled like she was having a minor orgasm. This show is certainly better in some ways, and not as great in others. The piano seems a bit more defined in the mix (often hard left) and it really lifts a few of the songs, because the playing is fantastic. I never enjoy when Elvis mocks Charlie Hodge - he is your dear friend, you should be nicer and not make the crowd think he's a dork. And his harmonies are perfect. Holy balls that ending for Can't Help Falling In Love is the stuff! The Elvis souvenirs are items you will treasure...

Elvis On Tour: April 14, 1972, Greensboro - Elvis Presley

Something is up with the mix on this album; it sounds a bit dull and I've had to kick up the volume a notch. Which is not what I need when I'm still recovering from a loud concert. So maybe it is just my ears getting tired after two similar sounding concerts? Hawtdam Elvis' voice on Bridge Over Troubled Water is phenomenal, but again Ronnie Tutt gets carried away. The setlist actually gets a bit of a change and a couple of new songs are added; Burning Love is performed with the caveat of "We don't know this one too well" and then they proceed to completely lose it halfway through. Man, Release Me is hilariously unkind. An Elvis button for $0.25? Get me four, please.

By chance, today is the 53rd Anniversary of this show! Let's hope it's a good one...
It is largely just a complete no-nonsense performance - very little jibber jabber or joking around and a big focus on putting on great performances. That is, until Suspicious Minds and Elvis completely loses the plot. They only make minor mistakes in Burning Love this time, and instead save that for An American Trilogy. They dropped Release Me? Bummer, I would have taken that over Funny How Time Slips Away yet again. A wonderful memento of this evening's show.

Elvis On Tour: The Rehearsals - Elvis Presley

This is all very... here. Clearly even in rehearsal Elvis could not remember the words to Burning Love. I would guess it didn't last too long in the setlist after this tour. One thing this demonstrates that Elvis between songs, Elvis clearly enjoyed just randomly singing some of his old 50s numbers. If you want to hear Elvis and the band mess around with For the Good Times for an hour, then these discs are for you! The final takes are pretty impressive performances and are basically how Elvis and crew would have sounded in concert without an orchestra. I wish he had been around long enough to try that. The gospel jams here are again a standout.

Elvis at Stax - Elvis Presley

I enjoy the outtakes on here, because they are like having the masters without the overdubs - an idea the Elvis team actually have been using on a few releases - so you get a focus on the song and Elvis' performance. I also would have liked if Elvis had used the Stax musicians and made something more funky, but there are still some great songs in here. And, as per usual Elvis, they are a mix of styles. The lyrics don't really work for Good Time Charlie's Got the Blues; Elvis was older than 33 and he had already lost his wife. Or maybe he was just confirming the warnings he was given? Midway through disc 2 we move on to the masters and, to be honest, they started with the most average of the bunch. For a song called Raised on Rock, it sure does very little 'rocking'. But then we move to disc 3 and things kick off with a seriously rocking version of Promised Land, and after that things pick up nicely. Elvis' old granddaddy is someone I can relate with... It closes off with If That Isn't Love, which might be my favourite gospel number from Elvis.

Elvis Back at Nashville - Elvis Presley

Pretty sure that title needs changing. This set is apparently ordered "thematically"; Disc one is country/folk/piano and pop songs, disc two is gospel and Xmas songs, disc three is outtakes and whatnot, and disc four is gospel and Xmas outtakes. So kind of the opposite approach of the Stax set. Also, the songs on this have all been remixed to remove all overdubs - so it is just Elvis and the band. It serves to make things quite chill. And shows up a bunch of mistakes in It's Still Here. But it means Elvis' voice isn't hiding behind an orchestra and backing vocals - which makes things very interesting. I definitely prefer this version of I'm Leavin'. And bah gawd his vocals on We Can Make the Morning are massive. Why does Elvis say to hold hands with Geddy Lee? Was he a massive Rush fan? The gospel numbers are all awesome. I actually don't mind these Xmas songs - they are the less cheesy predictable songs, because he had already recorded those. On to the outtakes and whatnot. Elvis must have really loved singing Don't Think Twice, It's All Right, because not only is there a 9-minute version on the first disc, but here in the middle there is a full 11-minute version as well. The gospel outtakes are very good. The Xmas outtakes are more humorous than anything - Elvis is clearly trying to make the sessions a bit more fun for himself. And I have never heard him swear so much. This is a surprisingly great set and the chill-ness to the whole thing is really what I needed after a night out watching the greatest punk rock band put on a great live show. My head and neck are quite sore today!

The Complete Elvis Presley Masters: Alternate Masters - Elvis Presley
Just when you thought Elvis had left the building...
Not sure what happened here that these were split, when the others weren't. Also, I had changed the title, but must have missed some sorting option or something, because I expected this in another couple of months. So back to 50s Elvis we go! These are all slightly different to the main versions that I am used to. Then we get movie versions of a bunch of movie songs that had different performances in the movies. I'm making sense! The alternative song called Roustabout is better than the one they ended up using (I'm a Roustabout). I dig the slide guitar in Amazing Grace. After a groovy version of She Thinks I Still Care, we are off to some rehearsals and private recordings. Some of these sound like he is just jamming at home with Charlie Hodge. These jams from the That's The Way It Is rehearsals are a big barrel of fun. And Elvis giving a solo acoustic performance of I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry is the best I have ever heard this song.

Complete Fucker Demos - Whiskeytown
And there I was trying to keep the swearing out of this bLogging... These sound a lot more polished than demos. And are way more rocking than I was expecting; I thought this was going to be some chill alt. country-styled jams, and instead this is 90s college radio rock. Nice to hear Ryan Adams when he sang great! Ah ok, about halfway through it turns in to more what I expected. And then back again? I guess it is a collection of demos or whatever, so the different styles kind of makes sense. Either way, this is good.

The Complete James Brown Christmas - James Brown
Bah gawd, I really chose the wrong time of year to do this! This is certainly a different Xmas experience; he isn't just singing the usual Xmas standards or anything - this is all James Brown making soul music and throwing in Xmas lyrics. And typical James Brown instrumental jams? Including one called Believers Shall Enjoy (Non-Believers Shall Suffer). That doesn't exactly sound like the Xmas spirit. Then again, he also spends one 'Xmas song' thanking the listener for coming to his shows. Say It Loud (I'm Black and I'm Proud) is included in here? I guess listening to that makes me happier than a kid at Xmas?

The Complete Million Dollar Quartet - Elvis Presley
I guess I haven't listened to enough Elvis lately? I am still not convinced this really is all four of them; Johnny Cash is nowhere to be heard (vocally) and Elvis kind of comes and goes. And of course they kind of start with some Xmas songs... The highlight of this recording is Elvis giving a review of the Elvis impersonator at the Fats Domino show he went to. And 'Killer' showing how he got that nickname. I do wish they had known what they were doing with Brown Eyed Handsome Man - I'm sure that would have been great if they could have remembered the words. The gospel jams are seriously fantastic. It all runs out of steam after Elvis tries to sell them all on That's When Your Heartaches Begin (which kind of proves Cash is not there, because his baritone voice would be perfect for that song), but it is an enjoyable listen that clearly I ignore way too often!

Concert: The Cure Live - The Cure
This is one of those live albums where some of the songs are inferior to the studio versions, but then some are actually a little bit cooler or have more attitude or something. Early 80s The Cure was so atmospheric and the drums always sounded very lo-fi, so live everything gives the songs a lot more energy. But then the studio versions have a lot more going on vocally, which is sometimes missing live. The saxamophone on Give Me It sounds like a goose strangling Bobcat Goldthwaite. I think I prefer this version of 10:15 Saturday Night. This is also the only copy of Killing an Arab that I have, since Robert Smith seems intent on erasing it from existence.

The Complete Elvis Presley Masters - Elvis Presley

1967 to 1977

Clambake... yeah... these songs are... songs? Maybe? Confidence is just bad, I can't even pretend anything else. The soundtrack for Speedway is better. Marginally. Crazy that someone heard this version of Guitar Man and thought 'this needs to be the central song to the 68 special!'; it isn't bad, but it certainly doesn't match the version recorded for the '68 Comeback Special. Anyways, I think we are done with soundtracks now. I have a few different versions of Elvis doing Too Much Monkey Business - they all are quite different - and this version has some pretty funky acoustic guitar and really subtle drums. It's pretty groovy. Clean Up Your Own Back Yard is about people being hypocrites telling other people how to live when they are doing the bad things - the irony of The King singing that is not lost on me. We hit 1969 for the brief tracks on here; I have these in some form as part of the From Elvis in Memphis reissue, but they are the mono masters there and I should have full stereo versions of Suspicious Minds and Kentucky Rain at all times. Strangely, I never got around to getting the On Stage reissue, so that pops in here. I can always take some 1970 live Elvis in Vegas fun. Interesting they abandoned the chronological order for the recording date and put this album in original tracklisting instead. I have not really listened to this album much, but I do enjoy that some of the songs have quite slower tempos to how they were performed on That's The Way It Is. I am yet to pick up the From Elvis in Nashville box set (despite having the follow up set, Back in Nashville), so from here we move on to the legendary first Nashville sessions. Well, except for the gospel recordings (I have those in a separate set as well). I'm not as in love with these as Elvis world would demand I be; they're okay, but mostly very country and I'm not the biggest country fan. It's fine, but I prefer rockin' Elvis. Or just straight up ballad Elvis. Or gospel Elvis. Huh, I guess I didn't remove the Back in Nashville tracks, because I am now Back in Nashville? Perhaps because these are the original masters and that set is all the overdubs removed. Interesting. I should put them on back to back and see which I prefer. But not right now, I still have about 20,000 other songs to listen to... like Elvis singing Christmas songs. The cowbell in Burning Love is life. I've finally made it to 1976, when Elvis is far from his physical peak. But his voice is more powerful than ever. I love the massive harmonies in Bitter They Are, Harder They Fall. This is a reminder I need to get that Jungle Room compilation so I can separate out all his final recordings and enjoy those outtakes as well. FUN FACT: the final live masters were recorded on my birthday... just 3 years before I was born. And because nothing is ever easy with me, these are all followed by bonus live masters. I'm guessing these weren't included in the main section because they are rarites than anything; some are poor quality (and I'm pretty sure a few of them are in the Boy From Tupelo set), some are different renditions not found elsewhere, and then there is the "laughing version" of Are You Lonesome Tonight, in which Elvis just breaks in to hysterics and derails the entire performance. I love that for him. The overdubbed version of Unchained Melody is certainly much cheesier than the original performance found on the main set (and recorded as a pre-birthday present to me!).

The Complete Elvis Presley Masters - Elvis Presley

1961 to 1966

Fun fact: the first 12 songs I am listening to from 1961 (mostly used for the Something for Everybody album) were recorded 64 years ago today! And then it is on to the songs recorded for Blue Hawaii. They are mostly as lame as the movie. Things start to get jumbled up from here, so I might stop talking about what they were recorded for. But needless to say, the songs not recorded for the movies are generally better than the ones that were. That is not to say that all the soundtrack songs were awful; I actually dig the songs for Follow That Dream - and the movie itself. It is hilarious; Elvis plays a complete simpleton and appears to be having a fun time. I'm surprised Elvis hasn't been cancelled for Plantation Rock. And many other things. It Happened at the World's Fair is another one of my favourite Elvis movies - hilarious movie. And a couple of great songs on the soundtrack. Only a couple. One Broken Heart For Sale is actually an awesome song. Who makes a song called Mexico and never once mentions Lucha Libre? 1963 was generally a pretty decent year for The King; some fun singles like Bossa Nova Baby, You're the Devil in Disguise and What'd I Say, and the soundtracks ranged from harmless (Fun in Acapulco) to iconic (Viva Las Vegas). "The eyes of Texas are upon you and you can not get away" is gawdam frightening! I've changed my mind: Barefoot Ballad is genuinely the worst Elvis song on the planet. Or any other planet, ever. Kissin' Cousins is disturbing enough, but Kissin Cousins #2 is even weirder, with lines like "Kissin's allowed because we're proud". Yikes! In 1964 we get It Hurts Me and Little Egypt - both re-recorded and improved greatly for the '68 Comeback Special - and then just 2 soundtracks? I liked Girl Happy, but can barely remember Roustabout. Oh, Do The Clam was also 1964. What an odd single/idea/song/everything. 1965 is simply just soundtracks again; I recall Harum Scarum wasn't as bad a movie as I was led to believe. The soundtrack, however, is very blah. The Frankie and Johnny soundtrack feels more 'big band' style than anything else Elvis has done. It's mostly fine. Spinout may well be my fav Elvis movie soundtrack. But again, I don't really remember the movie, even though I know I have seen it a few times. Might have to watch it again soon. Tomorrow is a Long Time is the longest song by Elvis by far! Until now, very few songs even made it past the 3-minute mark, but this one is 5 1/2 minutes long! Huh, I always thought Love Letters was a 70s song, but here it is in 1966 exactly where it has always been. The soundtrack for Double Trouble is also not bad. I just realised that, of course, I removed all the gospel songs and half the singles from the 60s - since I have them elsewhere - so this 60s section really is about 95% songs from the movies. Which is really making me want to watch all of Elvis' movies again. The songs from Easy Come, Easy Go are pretty funny; lots of love machine talk and ridiculous explanations of yoga.

The Complete Elvis Presley Masters - Elvis Presley

1957 to 1960

So, this isn't complete any longer; I have removed anything that I have on an actual album or box set. Because trying to search through 800 songs to find something is just impossible, and in those cases I am completely used to the album running order. So I have whittled this down to 488 by also removing the 'Alternate Masters' discs and giving them their own 'album'. So anyways... 1957 was a good year for The King. He recorded a lot of very good songs. It is odd that we haven't had any sort of specific collection for these - it is only 1957 and 1958 from the 50s that aren't on some sort of modern set. I could probably move out these Xmas songs to their own collection at some point, which would make a lot of sense; then I could easily crank up some Elvis on Xmas day each year. After Kiss. And James Brown. Between this and the '68 Comeback Special yesterday, you would think I have heard One Night and Trouble plenty enough for now, but listening to the original studio recordings here is like listening to them fresh. The whole King Creole soundtrack is awesome - one of Elvis' finest performances on film, as well. I absolutely love that main guitar riff on (Now And Then There's) A Fool Such As I - one of those riffs where I just have to pick up a guitar and jam along. Once returning from the army, he certainly had a bit of a different sound; gone is that reckless fire and a young rebel, and instead things are a lot tamer and much more pop. But it still mostly has a great groove and his voice is quite improved. Then we hit the soundtrack for G.I. Blues and it all immediately goes downhill; these songs are so uninspired and just cringe. Except for Tonight's All Right For Love - I like that song a lot! The rest of 1960 is a mix of movie songs and random tracks. None of them are particularly interesting. The movie songs work in the movies (and LOGMAN sure does love him some Elvis movies), but they are not anything special on their own.

The Box Set - Kiss

I reviewed this. After Kissathon II, I cleaned up my Kiss collection and The Box Set in my library no longer contains all the songs I have elsewhere - because I don't need to have a copy of Black Diamond on every album. I also removed all the Wicked Lester demos and all the other garbage. So now I have what equates to a single-disc compilation of Kiss rarities. And except for one or two songs, is basically limited to the original line-up. So this is now good times!

A Boy From Tupelo: The Complete 1953-1955 Recordings [Disc 1] - Elvis Presley

The birth of Rock'n Roll! Admittedly, the earliest recordings are pretty forgettable - they are just Elvis on guitar and singing, although his voice is very lovely. Once he hooks up with Scotty Moore and Bill Black, however, it is time for history making music. And in all honesty, some of it is such serious good times. And it is actually amazing how good it can sound for 70 year-old recordings. Essential listening.

This is all the outtakes from Disc 1. Which is amazing, really; why on Earth would anyone have thought to have kept these all those years ago? This was a time when music and film companies had no issue dumping works in the gawdam river to save them some storage space. Think about that. Some of these are just little fragments and clearly they've salvaged anything they can from wherever they can, but it is amazing there is anything at all. So I really shouldn't be complaining about 9 takes of Blue Moon...

A Boy From Tupelo: The Complete 1953-1955 Recordings [Disc 3] - Elvis Presley

This is every recorded live performance during the period. Again, how any of this even exists is pretty amazing. It's not like every home had a tape recorder or anything. Some of it is not exactly all that listenable - sounds like someone couldn't tune their radio properly. Elvis's dialogue between songs is often hilarious. You can get a photo of Elvis for $0.25. Get in quick before they sell out! And avoid Bob Neal so he doesn't make you buy him a hot dog...

A Boy Named Goo - Goo Goo Dolls

I used to really like Goo Goo Dolls. Name was this quintessential 90s alt. rock emo acoustic song, but Long Way Down is just a super rockin' awesome track. What I will say now is that John Rzeznik writes some great lyrics. What is easily forgotten, given their transition to full-on commercial pop/rock on the next album, is how much of an alt. rock band these cats were. This album is totally 1995 and I dig it. Even Robby Takac is not nearly as annoying as I used to find him.

Back From The Dead - Spinal Tap

Let's start the day with Britain's loudest band! What I should have done was just pulled out some of my favourite lyrics, because sometimes when you are paying attention to these songs carefully, there is just a great line or two that just makes me laugh. Anyways, this is mostly re-recordings of older Spinal Tap songs. David St Hubbins sounds older, for sure, but the songs still rock. And are a lot of fun. I didn't need them doing reggae, though. Fun fact: I've never been a fan of Stonehenge as a song; it works in the movie as a skit, but as a song, it really isn't much to listen to.

Back In Memphis - Elvis Presley

While not nearly as strong an album as From Elvis in Memphis, this follow-up still features that beautiful soulful sound that is found in all these sessions. Other than a few standout songs, this is all the fairly middle-of-the-road tracks that just couldn't make the cut, so the original album on its own does not actually score so well. Like, it's fine, but nothing special. But I have the reissue, which contains a bunch of mono singles from 1969. Which are almost all completely awesome. One of the few times I will be all 'Gimme the bonus tracks!'.

I forgot how good this album is. I'm not sure a 2 minute song with an almost chorus counts as an interlude? Oh, now I remember why I forgot how good this album is... because it isn't. The first half is amazing, but that ghastly fan appreciation 'song' is the turning point? It's all just completely self-congratulating and kills the vibe of the album. Far be it from me to tell an artist what they should do - that's only the purpose of my bLog - but this album should have been 1 disc and all the wannabe big band songs cut. They are just not good. I started off excited but ended up wanting to hit the skip button

Some absolute brilliant songs in here. I love how straight up and raw these lyrics are. Winehouse had no issues telling you that she was talking about drugs and alcohol, or that you are a dick. Absolutely no poetical-political nonsense going on here!

Back to the Light - Brian May

Bah gawd this album is fantastic. The title track alone is the most bombastic epic rock song you could ask for - definitely the most Queen sounding song on the album. Cozy Powell's drumming is huge. Dude was a beast. My only criticism would be the orchestration on Too Much Love Will Kill You. It's all a bit cheesy with the horns and whatnot. Still a great song. This album just rocks in general; you have the 'heavier' stuff, then the light-hearted rocking numbers, and some pop-rock, and your ballads. Overall, just a strong hard rock album from one of the greatest guitarist/songwriter/singer in hard rock.

Highlights: Back to the Light, Love Token, Resurrection, Rollin' Over

All About Chemistry - Semisonic
Almost 25 years ago, my brother moved overseas and left me a whole bunch of his stuff - including half of his CD collection. This was one of those CDs. And this is the first time I've ever actually listened to it! It's a fairly harmless piece of early-2000s radio rock. Nothing out of the ordinary here.

All Bad Things - Mötley Crüe
This was Mötley Crüe's farewell single. When they embarked on their final concert tour... before recording more songs and then going back on tour and then recording more songs and going back on tour. 80s rockers retire like they are pro-wrestlers. The funniest part of this song is that it opens with Nikki Sixx stating they "would rather just break up than be bland", but then this song is exactly that.

All My Life - Billy Joel
This was kind of in the same vein; Billy Joel kind of retired from releasing music in the 90s, and this was his first release since then, something like 15 years later. It's about what you'd expect from an older Billy Joel writing a love song. A very easy breezy piano ballad.

All Night Carnival - Various Artists
So there is this song called One Night Carnival by a group called Kishidan. And for the 20th anniversary of that single, their record label put together this album of other artists performing the song. It just so happens that their record label is Avex Tracks - home to some of the biggest artists in Japan. So you get 11 different artists like Ayumi Hamasaki, BiSH and Momoiro Clover Z giving their take on the same song. It's quite fun getting to hear all these different artists all on the same album... doing the same song. And that part can get a bit old. Because deep down, it is the same song 11 times. That said, some of them really do make this sound like a somewhat different song - the WANIMA version in particular. Because WANIMA are awesome.

All The Young Dudes - David Bowie
Well, my iTunes says this is Mott The Hoople, but this is definitely David Bowie singing. And it's a different version to the one found on the Aladdin Sane reissue. So I have no idea what version this is, right now. Clearly I have decided to start 2025 by failing at my musical knowledge. But this is the best studio version I have of the song. And this is a great song.

All Things Must Pass - George Harrison
This is quite likely the best solo album released by a Beatle. Folksy rock songs, ruminations on religion and love, Hare Krishna chanting, instrumental jams. This album has everything. Even a huge stack of reverb and Psycho Phil Spector's "Wall of Sound". I'm somewhat embarrassed that I do not have the 50th anniversary edition with the new remix (Harrison's son finally and went and did what his Father had been interested in doing, and stripped all that Spector stuff out), because I am genuinely interested to hear how it sounds, but I just don't drop all my money on albums I already own anymore - I save that for overpriced boxes of kung fu movies. And these Beatles-adjacent box sets have been getting more and more expensive. Wah-Wah is my favourite diss track of all-time (Euphoria is now a very close second). I dig the extra tracks on this, as well - apart from the 2000 version of My Sweet Lord. Also, people don't talk enough about Klaus Voorman's bass playing. Between this and Plastic Ono Band, the dude was awesome and had so much groove. Eric Clapton is also tolerable here. I'm not 100% convinced there isn't some type of modernisation going on with Out of the Blue, but it might be just the 5 hours of fake live Kiss I listened to yesterday. I'm sure George Harrison wasn't like that. And "moderinastion" is a hell of a word to throw at something released 25 years ago. I've written a lot, because this is a long album.

Allegiance - Firewind
I believe this was given to me by the guitarist in my short-lived rock band 15 years ago. I may have listened to it once? It's starting off like some sort of modern Iron Maiden. Wait - was that a dueling guitar and keyboard solo? I get why that dude liked this and gave it to me. Shred shred shred. Actually, with the dramatic vocals and the keyboards and the shredding (and the shredding keyboards?) it all sounds like a less-pop Psychic Lover! It's fun. Like most metal, I get pretty bored fairly easily, but still fun for what it is.

Aloha From Hawaii [12 January 1973] - Elvis Presley
This is the dress rehearsal concert from two days before the live broadcast. Okay, so this is a weird confession; I've seen this on my old DVD numerous times. However, I bought the Aloha From Hawaii boxset (both concerts on blu-ray and CD) a few months ago and... have yet to the listen to the CDs. Until now! Darn Elvis for being an unprofessional goof and messing up the lyrics to Burning Love - this could have been the best version ever! He also fumbles is his way through part of My Way. Shiz, Elvis ain't afraid of you mofos!

Aloha From Hawaii [14 January 1973] - Elvis Presley
Now it is time for the exact same concert just two days later! You see, Elvis performed and recorded the concert on the 12th as a backup in case they had any satellite issues on the 14th. It also meant they could make more money - as well as money for the children's benefit they were supporting with these shows. So the setlist is pretty much the same, just with a few extra songs (which are well worth it IMO). At least he remembers the words to Burning Love this time, though he does come close to messing it up still. In Elvis On Tour, the dude actually had to read the lyrics on stage. Normally Elvis made everything his own, but that was never the case when he covered The Beatles - his version of Something is just average no matter the night. Anyways, all I can say is this concert is OK to listen to, but much more enjoyable to watch, because you can see Elvis was having fun and that really lifts an otherwise average performance. Shiz, Elvis ain't afraid of you mofos!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Rewatch: Half-Time Report

It's been 9 years since I my initial complete viewing of the original 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, so I figured it was time to make another go of it. 100 episodes in, let's check in how things are going, shall we?

• There is not a bad episode in the first 3 seasons. Sure, there are a couple in season 3 that aren't so awesome as the others, but until I hit the European Vacation side-season, I didn't find myself not enjoying any of the episodes.
• But boy, that European Vacation side-season is pretty terrible. The whole things feels much cheaper and less polished. Raphael and Shredder having the replacement voices throughout (except for a couple of episodes for Shredder) doesn't help either. Also, and I'm guessing this is due to the Euro production involved, but people got way more into April. Shredder often talked to her about being beautiful and everyone wanted to kidnap her.
• Even more nonsense approach to the Euro episodes, is that Shredder and Krang knew the turtles were in Europe and decided this will be the one time they will explore the area. The turtles live in New York - if Krang knew about some special metal that could only be found in Italy, why didn't he go check that out in like episode 20? They can teleport to anywhere in the world, but the turtles can't.
• I think it was episode 74 when The Shredder said something like "I'm sick of the turtles foiling my plans!". Poor dude - we're not even halfway through them foiling your plans!
• David Wise was a great writer, but it is kinda funny how many similar stories he wrote for other cartoons.
• Shredder's Mom might well be one of the funniest episodes I never saw as a child. 
• I totally didn't notice when I was young, and I don't think I was paying too much attention last time I went through the series, but bah gawd Rob Paulsen, Cam Clarke and James Avery did a lot of voices. Peter Renaday as the various mob bosses always cracks me up.
• Irma is awesome. I think she used to annoy me, but now she is absolutely one of my favourite characters.
• Naming Zach "the fifth turtle" is incredibly ludicrous; he helped them ONE TIME and they give him such an honour, but then we only see him like twice afterwards - clearly he is not an important part of their lives or success. April, however, is always there and often helps the turtles in various ways. She's awesome and is the real fifth turtle.
• Elvis makes many appearances and in many forms.

I just read a quote from the voice of April O'Neil where she compared the main voice cast to the Marx Brothers and it all makes sense. I love the humour in this show and I love old vaudevillian humour. The bad puns, the play on words, and breaking the 4th wall. It's all hilarious to me.

Anyways, I think that is enough for now. Let's see how the next 93 episodes go!
