2025 in 2025: Day 185

What's Going On - Marvin Gaye
The man with the silky-smooth voice preaching about peace and god and drugs. This album could not be more relevant today. The transitions between songs are almost as seamless as Marvin Gaye's voice.
Highlights: What's Going On, Inner City Blues (Makes Me Wanna Holler), God Is Love, What's Happening Brother
9/10

What's Going On (Deluxe Edition 50th Anniversary) - Marvin Gaye
Mostly live songs from a particular concert, but with the singles and an outtake tacked on the end. Bah gawd this man just sang like a dream,
Highlights: What's Going On (Original Singles Version), God Is Love (Original Singles Version), Head Title AKA Distant Lover
7.5/10

What's Going On: The Detroit Mix - Marvin Gaye
No, I am not sick of this album - I could listen to it all day long! This was like a pre-release mix, so uses alternate vocal tracks and the percussion is a little different in parts. A little more dreamy sounding. And the transitions are even better!
Highlights: What's Going On, Inner City Blues (Makes Me Wanna Holler), God Is Love, What's Happening Brother
9/10

(What's The Story) Morning Glory? - Oasis
Liam's voice on Roll With It is actually awesome. Noel's guitar tone is generally terrible and the electric guitars for the most part just sound messy. And the album is still the peak of Britpop and completely awesome.
Highlights: Cast No Shadow, Some Might Say, Champagne Supernova, Don't Look Back in Anger
9/10

Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not - Arctic Monkeys
A whole lot of indie rocks about being young and going to the clubs? And it just rules the schools? Inject this straight into my veins!
Highlights: Fake Tales of San Francisco, From The Ritz to the Rubble, A Certain Romance, Still Take You Home
8/10

Wheatus - Wheatus
This is only Teenage Dirtbag. This is the only good Wheatus song. Because it is the only Wheatus song I know. Man, that chorus had no business being so good.
9/10

When I Was Born for the 7th Time - Cornershop
This is only Brimful of Asha. It is the only Cornershop song I know... and I do not like it all that much. It is about 4 minutes too long. I could have listened to three Arctic Monkeys songs again!
3/10

When the pawn hits the conflicts he thinks like a king
What he knows throws the blows when he goes to the fight
And he'll win the whole thing 'fore he enters the ring
There's no body to batter when your mind is your might
So when you go solo, you hold your own hand
And remember that depth is the greatest of heights
And if you know where you stand, then you know where to land
And if you fall it won't matter, cuz you'll know that you're right - Fiona Apple
Yeah, I am going with the full title today. Fuck you and your problems. And that is kind of the vibe of this album - I love the angst in her voice on the opening track and on a few of the following tracks. And this may well the best lyrical display of the last 30 years.
Highlights: Paper Bag, On The Bound, Get Gone, Limp
8.5/10

Whenever You Need Somebody - Rick Astley
This is purely Never Gonna Give You Up. One of the most iconic songs of the 80s. The man had a voice that did not match the face.
9/10

Wherever We Want - The Tomboys
More indie rock from Kobe's favourite daughters. Well, my favourite daughters of Kobe? Lots of fun. Lots of bad guitar solos and backing vocals. Just the way it should be.
Highlights: RING ME, フルーツキャンディー, 月ミセ屋, DONUT!
7.5/10

White Blood Cells - The White Stripes
Is this fun indie rock day or something? The difference here is I just find Jack White awfully pretentious about his indie-ness.
Highlights: Fell In Love With a Girl, Hotel Yorba, We're Going to Be Friends
6.5/10

White Pony - Deftones
Nu-metal goes art rock? Deftones are not really nu-metal, but I think they are kind of adjacent? Anyways, this is heavy and groovy and this is my kind of heavy duty stuff.
Highlights: Digital Bath, Korea, Feiticeira, Elite
8/10

Who You Are - Jessie J
This lady is the textbook definition of "over-singing". And while she can technically do it, she does not sound good doing it at all.
Highlights: Price Tag, Who You Are, I Need This
6/10

Whoa, Nelly! - Nelly Furtado
It is like party folk music - socially-conscious acoustic music, layered in fun happy beats and various DJ noises you would find in pop radio back in 2000.
Highlights: Shit on the Radio (Remember the Days), Hey Man!, I'm Like a Bird
6/10

WIDE - INKYMAP
Summer is here to kick your ass! Incredible follow-up to a great album - non-stop awesome punk rock, with a growing impact as the album continues. So like a snowball? I think I am confusing my seasons and metaphors...
Highlights: カクメイノヒ, Serchlight, Teardrop, Goodnight and Goodbye
10/10

Wide Awake in Dreamland - Pat Benatar
I only have All Fired Up and the guitar solo is trash, like I am listening to The Tomboys again. But bah gawd if ever there was a song to get you pumped up, this would be it.

2025 in 2025: Day 149

R-GIRL's ROCK! - SCANDAL
A super budget sounding collection of cover songs I do not know, except for one - because it happens to be covered by everyone. I need to make my own cover and merge the high-points of every cover version. Also, what is an R-GIRL?
Highlights: secret base~君がくれたもの~
6.5/10

Racing into the Night [Single] - INKYMAP
Song of the year for 2024 and this year and every year after. That bridge with the rapping and gang vocals is just perfection.
Highlights: Racing into the Night, Mayday
9/10

RADWIMPS - RADWIMPS
Low budget indie early recordings. The earliest, even! It all sounds poorly recorded and there is something about the guitars that just sound terrible. Which is a shame, because some of the songs could have been good, I think?
Highlights: 「ずっと大好きだよ」「ほんと?..., 愛し ~明くる明け~
5.5/10

RADWIMPS 2 ~発展途上~ - RADWIMPS
More of the same, except maybe the guitars sound even worse? And the drums are mixed so far back in the mix it all honestly sounds like demos. Somewhere along the way they start mixing in rap and it immediately improves the album. 祈跡 is flashes of what made 君の名は。work.
Highlights: ヒキコモリロリン, そりゃ君が好きだから, 祈跡 [Album Version], 俺色スカイ
6/10

RADWIMPS 3 ~無人島に持っていき忘れた一枚~ - RADWIMPS
Things have immediately improved! There is a still a bit of poor production that kind of hampers songs like 25コ目の染色体 and へっくしゅん, but when this album rocks, it rocks pretty hard! Getting a label deal and putting in more effort helped them develop a much more commercial and interesting sound.
Highlights: 最大公約数, 4645, セプテンバーさん, 最後の歌
7/10

RADWIMPS 4 ~ふたりごと (一生に一度のワープ)~ - RADWIMPS
Say hello to the RADWIMPS we all knew and loved! Sure, this is not the absolute peak of their best, but it is the start of that real RADWIMPS sound era. And holy moly were they great!!! And it is crazy that they still got better than this; I actually wish I could just continue with a full RADWIMPS marathon right now to prove it right (and then experience the dramatic downfall).
Highlights: いいんですか?, 有心論, ます, Me Me She
8/10

Rage Against the Machine - Rage Against the Machine
I have said it before and I will say it forever: these guys should have just released this album and bounced and it would have just been the most legendary drop ever. This album is a perfect encapsulation of their anger at everything wrong with the world and has been the anthem of the youth (and angry leftists) since. Lightning in a bottle.
Highlights: Wake Up, Bombtrack, Know Your Enemy, Township Rebellion, Freedom
9/10

Rainbow - Mariah Carey
MC leaning heavily in to the popular hip-hop vibes of *checks notes* 1999? Yeah... that tracks with the sound of this. The G-Funk era had peaked about 3 years prior, so it would make sense to try and copy that here. Missy Elliott is awesome as always.
Highlights: Heartbreaker [Remix], Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now), Heartbreaker, Crybaby
6.5/10

RAINBOW - Ayumi Hamasaki
That bass line in Real me is so gawdamn ON! This whole album is full of power and emotion and powerful emotions. It is a weird mix of dark and intropective ballads, coupled with the biggest bops of the Summer - I mean, there is literally a song called July 1st. It is all rather glorious and a testament to the kind of diversity I love about Ayu. And the bass playing just kills me.
Highlights: Heartplace, Real me, July 1st, independent+
8.5/10

RAISE YOUR HANDS!! - PSYCHIC LOVER
This is a bit more poppy and upbeat, but then also features the darkest epic PSYCHIC LOVER song to finish things off. And the first song in English, which I do not need but it is still fun. I would like more PSYCHIC LOVER in the world...
Highlights: Welcome to the Real World, BIG BANG, Save My Soul, Vanguard Fight
7/10

Raised on Radio - Journey
I think this must have been the end of this lineup? Because this is definitely their weakest album; a few great songs, but all fairly mediocre harmless radio rock.
Highlights: Why Can't This Night Go On Forever, Suzanne, Be Good to Yourself, Raised on Radio
7/10

Raising Hell - Run-D.M.C.
The Kings of Rock really lived up to the moniker on this one; a lot of the songs have more energy and a bit more bite, the beats are solid and the guitars are everywhere (and out of tune on the title track). The awesome part is amongst the noise are a few VERY minimalist tracks that either feature just drums or are basically acapella, which gives space to the message the Kings are throwing out there.
Highlights: Proud to Be Black, It's Tricky, Walk This Way, You Be Illin'

2025 in 2025: Day 101

INKYMAP - INKYMAP
Just saw their drummer has left the group. That is a real bummer, because these guys just get better and better and this album is a shining example of how consistently great their brand of punk rock is. Just great track after great track.
Highlights: 飛行機雲, Morning Glory, 93, D.W.C.
8.5/10

innocent arrogance - BiSH
The "final" BiSH single. After what was supposed to be the final single at the end of the whole 'BiSH iS OVER' thing. And this was only the final until they did BiSH THE NEXT. Which produced two singles. Crazy stuff. This is big epic stuff. Not perfect, but still decent.
8/10

An Innocent Man - Billy Joel
The influence of 50s rock'n roll and doo wop feature heavily on this album. There is even some 60s Elvis vibes to some of these tracks. And Joel's love for Christie Brinkley is all over this. Which is completely understandable.
Highlights: The Longest Time, Christie Lee, Keeping the Faith, Tell Her About It
7/10

Innuendo - Queen
The most perfect guitar tone, which even makes up for Freddie Mercury singing about his cat peeing on his bed. The Show Must Go On may well be the greatest and most appropriate album closer in rock history. The best until the very end.
Highlights: Innuendo, Headlong, These are the Days of Our Lives, Bijou, The Show Must Go On
8/10

Inside In/Inside Out - The Kooks
Standard mid-00s British indie rock fare. The use of acoustic guitar everywhere adds a nice flavour. Pretty decent stuff, really.
Highlights: Sofa Song, She Moves in Her Own Way, Naïve, Time Awaits
6.5/10

Inside Out - MC Hammer
Hammer is back with his MC title and a sound that is very 1995. Well, the first half is; it is classic hip-hop and it grooves hard. The second half of the album is gospel. This may well be his most consistent album! It lacks the real highs of his earlier work, but there is nothing bad and he mostly has the song lengths under control. Mostly.
Highlights: Keep On, Everything is Alright, Bustin Loose, A Brighter Day
7.5/10

Insomniac - Green Day
Like Dookie, I used to perform a number of these songs while busking. Which was silly, because this album is far less known that Dookie. But not caring about that is punk rock. And this album being less popular also makes it more punk by default. That is absolutely how this works.
Highlights: Stuart and the Ave, Brain Stew, Westbound Sign, 86
8/10

Insomniac - Enrique Iglesias
This is really the most non-interesting album Enrique has made. It is all just... there. And for far too long. And why does this version have a bunch of remixes of songs not from this album?
Highlights: Do You Know? (The Ping Pong Song), Sweet Isabel, Dímelo, Not In Love (Armand Van Helden Club Mix - Feat. Kelis)
6.5/10

Interstate 46 EP - MONOEYES
Three songs. Gone has awesome use of half-time, which I am always a sucker for in punk rock. I needed some 細美さん - it has been too long!
Highlights: Interstate 46, Borderland, Gone
9/10

Into the Fire - Bryan Adams
I have lived with an error on this CD for the past 32 years. So I have never heard Victim of Love run through perfectly. Such a crime! Anyways, this is BA's best album. No big hits, just really classy songwriting all through, hitting on some personal topics like Canada's treatment of idigenous people and stuff like that. Also the lead guitar work from both BA and Keith Scott is tremendous; never overplaying anything, just really super tasteful. Oh, and killer tone.
Highlights:
9.5/10

Into the Gap - Thompson Twins
This is purely the excellent Hold Me Now. Could it be more of an 80s British new-wave pop song? Brilliant song.
10/10

Into the Sun - Sean Lennon
From a songwriting point of view, Sean Lennon is quite good. Probably a decent mix of his Father's penchant for pop sensibilities fused with his Mother's avant-garde approach to things. His voice is what lets it all down. That and everything on this album being completely unmemorable.
Highlights: [insert that gif of Vincent Vega looking around completely lost and high as a MF]
6/10

Invaders Must Die - The Prodigy
This was the big 'comeback' album, and it is certainly full of big beats and breaks like any good albums from The Prodigy should. It is like a high-energy non-stop barrage of dance beats!
Highlights: Invaders Must Die, Omen, Run With the Wolves, World's On Fire, Stand Up
8.5/10

Invaders Must Die: Lost Beats - The Prodigy
The bonus disc to Invaders Must Die. I could probably rename it to just Lost Beats if I really wanted to. It is also much less necessary than Invaders Must Die.
Highlights: Wild West

2025 in 2025: Day 72

The Final Countdown - Europe
Yeah, this is purely the title track. And it stomps. One of the most iconic intros of all time.
8/10

FiNAL SHiTS - BiSH
The beginning of the end (AKA BiSH is OVER) and while the main single is fine, the b-side is actually way cooler. Go figure.
Highlights: NOT FOREVER
8/10

Final Straw - Snow Patrol
I forgot how great most of this album actually is. Great lyrics, interesting vocal delivery (in the sense that he's almost just talking softly mostly the time), and rocking numbers without rocking too hard. Then coupled with a few epic kind of ballads and some lo-fi chill as well.
Highlights: How to Be Dead, Chocolate, Run, Spitting Games, Same
8/10

Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces - Seether
No idea how or why I have this. Luckily, it is just one song - Fake It.
5/10

Firestarr - Fredro Starr
I think this dude was on like Moesha or something? He's like DMX-lite and he is Dyin' 4 Rap. But the dude was down with JMJ, so that will always win points with me.
8/10

The First Recording - Heather Nova
Even back when her name was Heather Frith. Very simple acoustic numbers.
Highlights: These Walls
6.5/10

FIVE - Ayumi Hamasaki
The most perfect Ayu E.P.? Dance rock, fun bop, epic power ballad, beautiful ballad and then just epic over the top nonsense?
Highlights: progress, Why..., beloved
10/10

Fixurlifeup [Single] - 3RDEYEGIRL
One of my gripes with Prince in the modern-era was his inconsistency when it came to singles; sometimes they were just a single, sometimes they would end up on an album. So you just had to play roulette with buying the single and hope it didn't end up on an album. And, of course, this one did.
7/10

Flame Vein +1 - Bump of Chicken
Something about Bump of Chicken I can't put my finger on... like, they are good, and I enjoy listening to them... but nothing ever really stands out that much?
Highlights: ガラスのブルース, アルエ, ノーヒットノーラン, ナイフ, バトルクライ
7/10

Flaming Schoolgirls - The Runaways
I love The Runaways, but this really is a weird compilation; The Beatles' covers are not good and the Hollywood Cruisin' skit is just pointless, but then we get some cool live tracks that absolutely rock. They could have just added them to the Live in Japan album - a deluxe edition of that would be most welcome.
Highlights: C'mon, Blackmail, Is It Day or Night?, Secrets
6.5/10

Flash Back Summer End [Single] - INKYMAP
Nothing like some quickfire INKYMAP to rock the summer party. Honoh is not like anything else they've ever released.
Highlights: Flash Back Summer End, Honoh
8/10

Flash Gordon (Original Soundtrack) - Queen
I remember a while back this album started getting a bit of a resurgence with internet nerds or something. There are really only two actual songs on here. And the versions of Flash's Theme are both different structurally to the single version. It has been a very long time since I watched the film, but I feel like this soundtrack moves in chronological order?
Highlights: Flash's Theme, The Hero, Football Fight, Battle Theme, Flash's Theme Reprise
7/10

Flashback - Joan Jett
A whole bunch of random Joan Jett tracks. Some are worthwhile, some are just kinda there. Which is always the case with these kinds of compilations. And, let's be honest, most of Joan Jett's albums. However, I forgot about Joan rapping and that is the greatest moment of the 80s.
Highlights: Be My Lover, Black Leather, Light of Day, MCA
7.5/10

Flashdance: Original Soundtrack from the Motion Picture - Various Artists
Would you believe that this is not the complete album? Particularly when there are so many great musicians involved with it. I should turn in my 80s membership...
Highlights: Flashdance... What a Feeling - Irene Cara, Maniac - Michael Sembello
9/10

Flavors of Entanglement - Alanis Morissette
Alanis going full in to electropop. Guy Sigsworth's production and just general song-shaping hold up - this album does not really sound dated at all. Today seems to be a day for forgotten gems in my library.
Highlights: Underneath, Versions of Violence, Tapes, Incomplete
7/10

Flavors of Entanglement (Deluxe Edition Bonus Disc) - Alanis Morissette
These are the most middle of the road bonus tracks one could ask for. Alanis enjoys tequila.
Highlights: Limbo No More
6/10

Flesh & Wood - Jimmy Barnes
Barnesy goes unplugged. Covers and collabs and reworkings. I could do without the fiddle, because that makes things a bit more country, but otherwise this is all pretty decent.
Highlights: The Weight, Ride the Night Away, Fade to Black, Still Got a Long Way to Go
7/10

2025 in 2025: Day 28

The Box Set - Kiss
I reviewed this. After Kissathon II, I cleaned up my Kiss collection and The Box Set in my library no longer contains all the songs I have elsewhere - because I don't need to have a copy of Black Diamond on every album. I also removed all the Wicked Lester demos and all the other garbage. So now I have what equates to a single-disc compilation of Kiss rarities. And except for one or two songs, is basically limited to the original line-up. So this is now good times!
Highlights: It's My Life [Original Version], Got to Choose [MTV Unplugged], Strutter [Demo]
7/10

A Boy From Tupelo: The Complete 1953-1955 Recordings [Disc 1] - Elvis Presley
The birth of Rock'n Roll! Admittedly, the earliest recordings are pretty forgettable - they are just Elvis on guitar and singing, although his voice is very lovely. Once he hooks up with Scotty Moore and Bill Black, however, it is time for history making music. And in all honesty, some of it is such serious good times. And it is actually amazing how good it can sound for 70 year-old recordings. Essential listening.
Highlights: That's All Right, Blue Moon of Kentucky, Just Because, Mystery Train, Tryin' to Get to You
7/10

A Boy From Tupelo: The Complete 1953-1955 Recordings [Disc 2] - Elvis Presley
This is all the outtakes from Disc 1. Which is amazing, really; why on Earth would anyone have thought to have kept these all those years ago? This was a time when music and film companies had no issue dumping works in the gawdam river to save them some storage space. Think about that. Some of these are just little fragments and clearly they've salvaged anything they can from wherever they can, but it is amazing there is anything at all. So I really shouldn't be complaining about 9 takes of Blue Moon...
Highlights: That's All Right (Takes 1-3), Blue Moon of Kentucky (Alternate Take), I Don't Care If The Sun Don't Shine (Takes 1-3/M)
6/10

A Boy From Tupelo: The Complete 1953-1955 Recordings [Disc 3] - Elvis Presley
This is every recorded live performance during the period. Again, how any of this even exists is pretty amazing. It's not like every home had a tape recorder or anything. Some of it is not exactly all that listenable - sounds like someone couldn't tune their radio properly. Elvis's dialogue between songs is often hilarious. You can get a photo of Elvis for $0.25. Get in quick before they sell out! And avoid Bob Neal so he doesn't make you buy him a hot dog...
Highlights: Blue Moon of Kentucky (Live), Shake Rattle & Roll (Live), Maybelline (Live)
6/10

A Boy Named Goo - Goo Goo Dolls
I used to really like Goo Goo Dolls. Name was this quintessential 90s alt. rock emo acoustic song, but Long Way Down is just a super rockin' awesome track. What I will say now is that John Rzeznik writes some great lyrics. What is easily forgotten, given their transition to full-on commercial pop/rock on the next album, is how much of an alt. rock band these cats were. This album is totally 1995 and I dig it. Even Robby Takac is not nearly as annoying as I used to find him.
Highlights: Long Way Down, Naked, Name
7/10

BOYS WILL BE BOYS - INKYMAP
Another fast-paced E.P. from the coolest punk rock band this side of ELLEGARDEN. Good times.
Highlights: Traveller, 光の射す部屋, Boys Will Be Boys

2025 in 2025: Day 24

Blackout - Britney Spears
It's Britney, bitch! This album is enjoyable, but also completely laughable. It is very clear that Ms. Spears was involved in the writing purpose - and I do not mean that as a compliment. The lyrics are generally just completely ridiculously terrible. However, some of the production is banging. Some. And her vocals are more processed than ever, so it sounds like a fembot from Austin Powers is "singing". Again, I'm taking liberties using that word, because even with all the manipulation, these vocals are still equal to a talent quest for 12 year-olds and are invoking a lot of snickers. And not the chocolate bar (where's my sponsorship, yo!). The whole thing has serious 'moody teenager' vibes and I have to keep stopping myself from scoring the songs higher because they're mostly making me smile - just because they're so stupidly bad. And holy smokes this sample of Eurythmics is about the worst song of the bunch. The funniest part here is that this isn't even her worst album! I'm pretty sure everything she released after this gets worse and worse.
Highlights: Gimme More, Break the Ice
4/10

BLACKPINK Essentials - BLACKPINK
Now this is some proper pop music. Every BLACKPINK track released before The Album, I believe. And it is all FIRE.
Highlights: Forever Young, As If It's Your Last, BOOMBAYAH, PLAYING WITH FIRE
8/10

Blak and Blu - Gary Clark, Jr.
This appears to be the song Ain't Messin 'Round. Honestly, I have never listened to this before. I don't know how it ended up in my iTunes. I have not even heard of this song or singer before. It's... good. Big horns and upbeat vibes.
7/10

Blank Label 7" - Blank Label (Ryan Adams)
JLW is a massive Ramones ripoff. Also, this is trash.
Highlights: Only 7 minutes
2/10

BLAST! - ももいろクローバーZ
Someone really needs to clue me up on whether their group name is written in Hiragana like that, or if the English Momoiro Clover Z is the correct choice. I'll continue to call them MCZ for simplicity. Anyways, this is a very fun EP from a very inconsistent idol group. Idol is shit, but MCZ have their moments - mostly this EP.
Highlights: BLAST!, 何時だって挑戦者
8/10

Bleach - Nirvana
When I was 13, Nirvana were the stuff. Because I was edgy, this was my favourite Nirvana album - it was their most budget indie grunge record they recorded for cheap in a matter of days. I'm not saying anyone who says this is their favourite Nirvana album is also as much of an edgelord as 13 year-old LOGMAN, but this is definitely not their best album and I am now old and mature enough to admit I liked the idea of this album more than the album itself. Also, cool album cover? All this is not to say the album is bad; About a Girl is infinitely better here than that Unplugged version (thank Prime I don't have that album), and Negative Creep is like a gift that keeps on giving. And no Dave Grohl is like double awesome points!
Highlights: Blew, School, Negative Creep, Downer
6.5/10

Bleed American - Jimmy Eat World
What a dumb name for an album - I should delete it just for that title alone. But this is just the one song, The Middle, of course. Do Jimmy Eat World have any other songs? Are they titled stupidly like this album is? At least this is a great pop punk song that every home should have.
8/10

Bleed Like Me - Garbage
The first half of this album is awesome. Back in '05, I would play these first four songs all the time. Well, mostly tracks 2 to 4. It's an impressive way to peak early, that's for sure. The rest of the album still has some decent songs, but they get overshadowed by how awesome those first four are.
Highlights: Run Baby Run, Right Between The Eyes, Why Do You Love Me
7.5/10

blink-182 - blink-182
So we just going to stick with my old emo songs from '05, huh? This is blink-182's best album, and I won't be taking any arguments otherwise. Dark, serious, interesting - just a genuinely strong album that often makes me mistakenly believe I am more of a blink-182 fan than I really am. I dig them, because I love pop punk. But usually their songs are immature silliness about sex stuff that I have no interest in. This album has none of that. And an appearance from Robert Smith! Great album.
Highlights: Feeling This, Obvious, Stockholm Syndrome, Asthenia
8/10

BLISTER ON MY FOOT - INKYMAP
This is INKYMAP's fist album. It's a bit more rough and hard rockin' than ASTEROID. There's nothing bad, but nothing that really stands out as much as with their later works (ASTEROID onwards). But a great start.
Highlights: Rainy Day, New World, Saturation, Drunken Driver
7/10

Blood on the Dance Floor: HIStory in the Mix - Michael Jackson
If this was simply an EP of the new songs, this would be a really solid MJ release. Really solid. The music and production on Ghosts is epic. My only criticism would be that Is It Scary is MJ's worst vocal performance ever recorded. Then there are the remixes; Scream, Money and 2 Bad are all super funky goodtimes, but the others are just your standard club-beat dance remixes. The one for You Are Not Alone (Classic Club Mix) is actually pretty decent - probably because that is a boring R. Kelly song that could only be improved upon with a remix. And Tony Moran's HIStory Lesson certainly does go big. Look, it's MJ. You're going to have a good time.
Highlights: Blood on the Dance Floor, Morphine, Superfly Sister, Ghosts, Scream Louder, 2 Bad (Refugee Camp Mix)

2025 in 2025: Day 10

Ashes & Fire - Ryan Adams
It is kind of hard to rate this stuff these days; this is a bit of a reminder that some of this is very good, however everything about the guy is so disingenuous and off-putting. The piano sound on the title track is perfection. And that solo on Do I Wait is awesome. I actually enjoy Adams' acoustic sound on this album. Was this the last album he made where his singing wasn't awful? Hmmm maybe not - his voice seems to be starting to be crap here, particularly on Save Me. That'll teach him to use song titles from Queen. I think I was pretty harsh on this album back during the marathon and I've possibly only listened to it once since then (about 8 years ago), but it seems to be better than I remember. In places.
Highlights: Ashes & Fire, Do I Wait, Chains of Love, Lucky Now
7/10

Ashes & Fire Bonus Tracks - Ryan Adams
The solo on Star Sign is quite good. Very quite good. Weird; I went back and looked at my marathon notes, and I said Darkness was on here. But I've deleted it? I only have 2 other versions instead. That's still more than a normal person should have, but still.
Highlights: Star Sign
6.5/10

The Ashes of Chikara - Various Artists
Chikara were a pro-wrestling promotion based in the USA that kind of based everything on a mix of Lucha Libre and comic book storytelling, pretty much aimed and children and dorks. So it was the best pro-wrestling promotion ever. They did a big story where the promotion was bought by some bad people and shut down, and then spent a year doing youtube and social media campaigns to bring it back, which culminated in the movie The Ashes of Chikara. And this is the soundtrack to that movie. Got it? It is mostly instrumental pieces mixed with some classic 80s artists like Wang Chung and Stan Bush. Oh, and a cover of Believe it or Not. I used to walk to work every day and this album was pretty much the perfect length for my walk. I totally forgot about Whatever Makes You Feel Superior - bah gawd this song is MY JAM! Sadly, dear reader, Chikara closed down for real a few years ago. Life imitating art and all that.

ASTEROID - INKYMAP
I completely discovered this band by accident - was looking for a gig to attend in 広島 and saw something with like 6 bands for under 3000円. INKYMAP were second from the top. They rocked. I bought this album from their merch table (the bass player told me I should, and who am I to argue?). I think they may have just released it or something... anyways, they've since become one of my favourite bands. Definitely one of the best punk rock bands going in Japan today.
Highlights: 白銀の夜に, The Delight, マタアウヒマデ

Astronaut - Duran Duran
Oooh reunion-era Duran Duran! This is the most harmless dancey Duran Duran album you could possibly ask for. Possibly a bit long? Like, if you're going to make a relatively uninteresting album, you could at least keep it around 40 minutes.
Highlights: (Reach Up for the) Sunrise, Nice, Finest Hour

Asylum - Kiss
I... actually like this album. Mostly. It's still not the raucous fun of early Kiss, and things only got better from here (until after the reunion), but this album really was the turning point. Bah gawd, does Bruce Kulick shred up a storm on this thing! Having him join the Animalize tour was clearly a bad influence. Gene's singing is garbage. He needed to bring these songs down by like 4 or 5 semi-tones. Or Paul should have sung them. If Trial By Fire had a better chorus, it would be one of the best songs on the album - the verses and whatnot all have a real classic Kiss vibe to them.
Highlights: King of the Mountain, Who Wants to Be Lonely, Tears are Falling

At Her Very Best And All The Greatest Hits - Yazz
This is purely the single The Only Way is Up. As much of a music nerd as I am (and love 80s music), I have no idea of any other songs by Yazz that could make a greatest hits compilation. I couldn't even make a greatest hits EP.

At the BBC - Queen
Finally some Queen! I knew it would be some time before I got to them, so I went on a bit of a listen to some albums before starting the iTunes marathon. This album is them "live" at the BBC studios in 1973, so it is far from complete - pretty sure they appeared another 3 or 4 times. Queen have made this album completely redundant by releasing all the complete BBC stuff in a box set, and then again by releasing all the BBC tracks as part of the big box sets they have been releasing. But this is what I was given, so it will do until I can muster up the energy to re-purchase my Queen collection. With all the overdubs and whatnot, it all sounds pretty much exactly the same as the studio recordings. So it's kind of like a 'best of the first album', with very minor differences. Notably Freddie Mercury messing up his overdubs on Keep Yourself Alive (as in, one track sings different lyrics to the other track).

ATE - Stray Kids
LOGMAN joins the 21st Century! Would you believe I actually went to a Stray Kids concert late last year? No joke. It was awesome. And so is this... mini-album?

Atlas - Kinky
Truly an international day here at LOGMAN radio; first some Japanese, then some Korean, and now Spanish! That guitar riff in Presidente always rocks my world. I kind of feel like guitar is a bit more prominent on this album compared to some others, because there are some cool riffs all over the show. The middle loses a bit of steam, but there is not a bad song on this album. Just solid grooves, funky beats, bizarre lyrics, and all-around good vibes. There has to be something to say about a band that does not make slow songs or ballads.

Audio Out - Amiel
This is an album that actually influenced me a bit; Josh Abrahams' production and how they worked to shape her songs really made me rethink how I was approaching what I was working on at the time. It didn't really help me, but that's because I'm me. I wish they could have done a follow up to this; Amiel did make a second album, but with a different producer... and then it was scrapped before release and she's disappeared since. At least I can still enjoy her singing "Dolphinarium" on Micallef Tonight!
Highlights: Clair De Lune, Missing the Music, Games We Play

Audioslave - Audioslave
I've never thought too much of this album. Which is strange; I had a lot of love for Chris Cornell and I certainly enjoyed Rage Against the Machine. And the music is still pretty decent; Tom Morello does his weird solos (some are amazing, like in What You Are and Like a Stone), Tim C's bass is beasty and Brad Wilk is as solid as always. But Cornell on this... I don't know. His voice his rough and the melodies aren't that interesting.
Highlights: the bass tone, a couple of guitar solos, and accepting this album just ain't for me

Oh Mummy, What's a Sex Pistol?

I think I figured out the answer to that today. I wonder if anyone ever told Richie Edwards the answer...
